Empowered by Education: Hemanti Devi’s New Beginning.

In Pasia village, Koderma, Hemanti Devi has spent more than fifty years of her life believing education was beyond her reach. As a young girl, she was told, "What will you do with studies? Your life will be restricted in the kitchen." Marriage and hardships kept her away from formal education—until now.

With the support of Coal India Limited under Rotary India Literacy Mission’s Adult Literacy Program, Pasia Vidya Centre opened its doors, giving Hemanti a second chance for education. Encouraged by Asha Kumari, the Akshar Sathi (teacher in the Vidya Center), she took a bold step forward of enrolling herself in the Vidya Center and ensured attending it regularly. Now, she can write her name with pride, recognize numbers, and emerged as a role model for many women of her village. She plays an important role in motivating others for attending the centre regularly.

She believes that education has no age limit and it brings limitless opportunities. She thanked Coal India to help set up the learning centre at her village.

Empowering Lives through Literacy!

Adult literacy centers are being a point of attraction for many. Recently, on the 9th of February the Honourable Block Development Officer (BDO) of Naktideul Block, District Sambalpur, Odisha visited two Vidya centres located at Pitasiari and Kanchanpur villages.

He was accompanied by the President and Secretary of the Rotary Club of Sambalpur Greater, Rtn. Bilal Mallick and Rtn. Sumit Nayak. The visit was reported in a local daily in Odisha.

The BDO appreciated the Rotarians for their unwavering commitment for promoting literacy, through supporting a total of 10 such centres, in the area of his jurisdiction. The BDO, through his speech encouraged the learners to attend the sessions regularly and emphasised the positive changes which will happen once they complete all the recommended sessions. The group engaged in one-on-one interactions with learners to assess their progress and were thrilled to witness the remarkable improvements and enthusiasm among the learners.

Rotary India Literacy Mission, in collaboration with Coal India Limited (CIL) and the Rotary Club of Sambalpur Greater, has established 10 Adult Literacy Centres in Naktideul Block, Sambalpur District, Odisha, through a local NGO. These centres are dedicated to uplifting and empowering adult learners by equipping them with essential literacy skills.

Literacy - A path to Hope and Opportunity.

On 10th January 2024, Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) achieved a truly transformative milestone with the inauguration of 12 Vidya Adult Literacy Centres in Sukinda, Jajpur, Odisha.
This incredible initiative is the result of the united efforts of Coal India Limited (CIL) and Rotary India Literacy India Limited (RILM)- showcasing a shared commitment to building a more self-reliant and inclusive society.

These centres are more than just places of learning, they are opening doors for the underserved communities to acquire basic literacy skills needed to confidently navigate everyday life. The centres offer a second chance to individuals who missed the chance to read and write.

Literacy is deeply intertwined with an individual’s identity and open doors to a better quality of life. Let’s keep moving forward to make India Totally Literate.

A New Chapter in Kausar Bano’s Life!

In the village of Madina Muslim Tola of JHARKHAND, 45-year-old Kausar Bano’s life has taken an extraordinary turn. Growing up in poverty and married at a young age, her dream of learning felt out of reach- until the Adult Literacy Program of Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) gave her a new start.

Facing societal judgment and family resistance, Kausar persevered, attending classes at Vidya Centre run by RILM in collaboration with Coal India Limited (CIL). With each lesson, her confidence grew, and she became an inspiration to those around her. Her decision to learn gave her a fair chance to rewrite her story from being a survivor of the challenges to becoming the hero of her own story.

"Learning to read didn’t just open books—it opened doors to a new world of possibilities," Kausar shares with pride.
