PRESS RELEASE

Despite evident administrative and infrastructural lapses in the tragic saline-related patient death incident at Medinipur Medical College, the then-Head of the Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Alauddin, was unjustly suspended by the previous government. Instead of fixing accountability for systemic failures, the burden was shifted onto doctors, a move that caused deep anguish across the medical community.

Indian Medical Association Bengal State Branch opposed the decision, a team led by state president met the affected doctors at Medinipur, talked with local Administration and firmly wrote to reconsider the decision.

Today members of IMA are happy to see that the newly elected government of Bengal has reinstated Dr. Alauddin with due honor.

For this just decision, IMA Bengal State extend heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari and Hon’ble Health Minister Dr Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay.

A true change in governance is reflected when past injustices are corrected and the honour of the innocent is restored. This step sends a strong message that the state will stand by its doctors and uphold fairness in administrative action.

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 2026 was observed by Indian Medical Association Calcutta Metro Branch and Banchbo Healing Touch Foundation under the aegis of Indian Medical Association Bengal State at Jatra Shuru Sangha Hall, Garia, South Kolkata on 14th June 2026.

This program witnessed an enthusiastic gathering of senior citizens along with eminent physicians, public health experts, social workers, and representatives of organizations working in the field of elderly welfare.

Distinguished guests included Prof. Dr. Prasanta Bhattacharyya (President, IMA Calcutta Metro & Hony Secretary, JIMA), Prof. Dr. Debasish Basu (Former Principal, Medical College Bengal), Prof. Dr. Ranjan Bhattacharyya (Editor, JIMA & Hony Joint Secretary, IMA Bengal State), Dr. Anirban Dalui (Hony Asst Secretary, IMA HQ & IMA Bengal State), Dr. Tarit Chatterjee (Treasurer, IMA Calcutta Metro) along with several other eminent medical professionals..

A major highlight of the event was a special panel discussion titled: “Break the Silence: Recognize, Prevent and Respond to Elder Abuse.” The panel featured distinguished experts including Dr. Debanjan Banerjee (Consultant Psychiatrist, Apollo Multispeciality Hospital), Dr Rahul Bhattacharyya (Secretary, Geriatric Society of India West Bengal Chapter), Dr Rivu Basu (Eminent Public Health Expert, AIIH&PH), Dr. Udita Ghosh Sarkar (Eminent Gerontologist) and was moderated by Dr. Dhires Chowdhury, Founder-Director of Banchbo Healing Touch Foundation.

The rich and thought-provoking discussion highlighted the various forms of elder abuse, including physical, psychological, financial, and social abuse. Special attention was given to the growing challenges of emotional neglect, social isolation, intergenerational disconnect, loneliness, and digital fraud targeting older adults. Panelists also underscored the responsibilities of families, communities, youth, and older persons themselves in addressing these issues.

As part of the observance, free health consultations and essential health screenings were provided to senior citizens by specialist doctors. Representatives from the Kolkata Police’s PRONAM Project, members of retired employees’ associations, representatives of various NGOs working for elderly welfare, and numerous senior citizens were also present.

The day-long programme, combining awareness, healthcare services, expert deliberations, and cultural activities, reinforced the collective commitment to ensuring dignity, safety, inclusion, and respect for older persons. Thanks to Dr Dhiresh Chowdhury and Team Banchbo Healing Touch Foundation.

World Environment Day is observed globally on 5th June every year to raise awareness and encourage action for protection of the environment. Recognizing that environmental health is inseparable from human health, IMA Barasat Branch under the aegis of IMA BENGAL STATE organized a scientific programme on 5th June 2026, Friday at Dr. Mohit Chatterjee IMA House, Sethpukur, Barasat to sensitize medical professionals and the community about environmental determinants of health.

Dr. Santanu Sen, Hony. State Secretary, IMA Bengal State; Ex-MP (Rajya Sabha) & Past National President, IMA HQ graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Special Guest, Shri Sankar Chatterjee, Hon’ble MLA, Barasat Assembly Constituency enlightened the house with his esteemed presence.

Other senior leaders like Dr Ratan K Chakraborty (Senior Vice President, IMA Bengal), Dr. Swapan Kumar Roy (President, IMA Barasat), Dr Monoranja Sarkar (Hony Asst Secretary, IMA Bengal), Dr. Subrata Mondal (Hony. Secretary, IMA Barasat), Dr BN Kanjilal, Dr Sanatan Bandyopadhyay, Dr Ranjit K Sarkar etc. also attended the program.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Branch President followed by watering a sapling as a part of Tree Plantation Drive by Hon’ble CM, Govt of WB.

Dr. Anirban Dalui emphasized the need to include environmental and occupational exposure history in routine clinical practice. Renowned Pulmonologist, Dr. Kausik Chaudhuri highlighted the burden of second-hand smoke and its link to respiratory diseases in children and adults. Dr. Ashraf Ali discussed climate change impacts on maternal and child health, vector-borne diseases, and reproductive health.

The programme successfully highlighted the intersection of environment and health to the medical fraternity. It reinforced IMA’s commitment beyond curative care towards preventive and environmental health advocacy. More than hundred doctors and common people participated actively.

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Swapan Kumar Roy (President) amd Dr Subrata Mandal (Hony Secretary) followed by high tea.

Subject: IMA Bengal State Branch strongly condemns the brutal attack on Dr. Anand Gupta, President-Elect, IMA Rajasthan at Udaipur and demands immediate arrest of culprits & Central Law for protection of doctors.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal State Branch expresses deep anguish and unequivocally condemns the assault on Dr JP Sharma and Dr. Anand Gupta of Rajasthan by relatives of a patient on 2nd June 2026 at Dr. J.P. Sharma Orthopedica Hospital, Udaipur.

Dr Anand Gupta (President Elect, IMA Rajasthan) was attacked while he went to rescue a fellow doctor, Dr JP Sharma, reflecting the alarming rise in mob violence against the medical fraternity. Such heinous acts are a direct assault on the healthcare delivery system and are completely unacceptable in a civilized society.

IMA Bengal State Branch demands immediate arrest of all accused and a time-bound investigation with exemplary punishment under the strictest provisions of law.

We urge the Hon’ble Chief Minister and DGP of Rajasthan to intervene personally and ensure swift justice. Repeated violence against doctors demoralizes the entire medical community and disrupts essential services to society.

IMA Bengal State Branch stands in full solidarity with IMA Rajasthan State Branch and Dr. Anand Gupta. We appreciate his courage and commitment to the profession.

Violence against doctors is violence against society. The safety of doctors is non-negotiable.
