🏛️ Ancient Gujarat (before 700 CE)
Indus Valley Civilization (c. 2600–1900 BCE)
Gujarat was a major center of the Harappan (Indus Valley) Civilization.
Key sites: Lothal (a dockyard and trading hub), Dholavira, and Gola Dhoro.
These sites show evidence of planned cities, maritime trade, and early forms of urbanization.
Post-Harappan & Vedic Age
After the decline of Harappan civilization, tribal communities like Nishadas, Bhils, and Kolis emerged.
By the Mauryan Empire (322–185 BCE), Gujarat was under the control of Emperor Ashoka.
Gujarat became a center of Buddhism and trade.
🏯 Medieval Gujarat (700–1300 CE)
Solanki Dynasty (c. 940–1244 CE)
Gujarat was ruled by the Chaulukyas/Solankis from Anhilwad Patan.
Famous rulers: Mularaja, Bhimdev I, Kumarapala (a Jain patron).
This was a golden age of temple architecture: Modhera Sun Temple, Rani ki Vav (stepwell).
Decline & Muslim Invasions
Attacks by Mahmud of Ghazni (1025) on the Somnath temple marked early Islamic incursions.
The Solankis were replaced by Vaghelas, who were then defeated by the Delhi Sultanate.
🕌 Gujarat Sultanate (1407–1573)
In 1407, Zafar Khan Muzaffar declared independence and formed the Gujarat Sultanate.
Ahmad Shah I founded Ahmedabad (1411) as the new capital.
Famous rulers: Mahmud Begada (expanded the Sultanate and built forts at Champaner and Junagadh).
Flourished in trade, especially with Arabs and Portuguese.
The Sultanate declined after Akbar (Mughal Emperor) annexed it in 1573.
👑 Mughal & Maratha Period (1573–1800)
Mughal Rule
Gujarat became a Subah (province) of the Mughal Empire.
Major port cities like Surat flourished in international trade (Europe, Arabia, Persia).
Declined in 1700s as Mughal control weakened.
Maratha Influence
The Gaekwads of Baroda (Maratha dynasty) gained control over parts of Gujarat.
The region was fragmented among princely states and local rulers.
🇬🇧 British Colonial Era (1800–1947)
British East India Company gained control after defeating Marathas.
Gujarat was split between:
Bombay Presidency (direct British rule),
Princely states (like Baroda, Junagadh, Bhavnagar,Nawanagar).
Gandhiji, born in Porbandar (1869), led India’s independence movement from Gujarat.
Economic and political unrest led to major civil disobedience movements (Salt March from Dandi in 1930).
🇮🇳 Post-Independence Gujarat (1947–present)
1947 Partition & Junagadh Issue
Nawab of Junagadh acceded to Pakistan; public protest and a plebiscite led to accession to India.
Formation of Gujarat State (1960)
Gujarat was carved out of Bombay State on May 1, 1960, based on linguistic identity (Gujarati-speaking).
Modern Political Landscape
Early dominance by **Indian National Congress.
Since 1995, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been the dominant political force.
Narendra Modi, former CM of Gujarat, became Prime Minister of India in 2014.
