Gold prices traded largely flat on Wednesday after staging a sharp recovery in the previous session from a seven-week low. While a stronger US dollar and elevated Treasury yields continued to pressure bullion, easing expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in the October FOMC meeting provided support to prices.

As of 5:35 AM, spot gold was up 0.1 per cent, or USD 2.60, at USD 4,184.46 per ounce. The precious metal had climbed nearly 2 per cent in the previous session after hitting a more than seven-week low of USD 4,110.55 per ounce.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has clarified that the newly announced Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on select UPI transactions will not be passed on to consumers. She said the mechanism will be imposed on operators and will not be passed on to customers.

Finance Minister's clarification comes amid the ongoing confusion over the MDR to be charged on the UPI transactions. Under the framework, effective October 15, 2026, a 0.4% MDR will apply to specified merchant UPI transactions above Rs 2,000, subject to a Rs 300 cap.

Addressing ongoing speculations around the charges, FM blamed the opposition for creating confusion and urged people to remain alert.
