FCRA – The Truth Nobody Wants to Speak About
In 2024, I visited a reputed hospital at the invitation of its management. During my visit, I observed certain practices that raised important questions in my mind about FCRA compliance and the broader use of foreign contributions in India.
The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) exists to ensure that foreign funds are received, managed, and utilized transparently and strictly for the purposes for which they are approved.
Foreign contributions are intended to promote public welfare in an inclusive and accountable manner. Whenever questions arise regarding transparency, governance, or compliance, they deserve careful examination by the appropriate authorities.
Over the years, the Government of India has cancelled or suspended the FCRA registrations of thousands of organizations for various compliance-related reasons, reinforcing the importance of accountability and transparency.
FCRA is more than a regulatory framework—it serves as a safeguard to:
✔️ Protect transparency in the use of foreign contributions.
✔️ Ensure funds are utilized for their declared charitable purposes.
✔️ Prevent misuse or diversion of foreign funding.
✔️ Strengthen public trust in genuine charitable institutions.
Organizations that fully comply with the law should have nothing to fear from transparency and regulatory oversight. Strong enforcement of FCRA is not about suppressing charitable work—it is about protecting public interest, ensuring accountability, and upholding the integrity of the system.
These are my personal views based on my observations and my understanding of the importance of transparency in public welfare.
