Akashdana - a sky without limit

Arise! Awake! and don’t stop until the goal is reached. - Swami Vivekananda

Amid Covid-19 crisis, the last thing that West Bengal needed was a super cyclone. Originating in the Bay of Bengal, when Amphan crashed upon the coastal belt of West-Bengal it left a trail of death and enormous destruction. It destroyed homes, uprooted trees and flooded hundreds of villages.

The Sunderbans mangrove region which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is Bengal’s first line of defence against the fierce storms that periodically arise in the Bay of Bengal. However, the people of this region pay a heavy price for this. The Livelihoods have been destroyed, houses were torn down, power systems and network connectivity shut down by the impact of Amphan. Most troublingly, the intensity of the storm has meant salt water from the sea has backed up into farmlands in the delta, rendering them useless for the next couple of years.

A group of college friends who are now well established in their respective fields and settled in different parts of the world were discussing about this devastation, but when they came to know about the severity of the damage, it was a wake-up call for them. They decided to act and contribute back to society - and Akashdana was formed.
