Celebrating Autism Month with Stories from life -

We witnessed the journey of little Shreyan, restless, rigid, unable to communicate, full of anxiety and insecurities . Now he is happy child , who can express his needs and understands others and cares for those around! We still remember how he would cry every day if his parents were even two minutes late after the final school bell. But today, this ten-year-old boy has learned to handle unforeseen situations with much greater ease.

He especially loves doing things in his own way and has developed a deep interest in drawing.

Initially, he would only colour pictures drawn by others. Over time, he began attempting to draw by observing. Today, he creates drawings from his own imagination. At times, he asks for a topic and explores it with curious eyes. When something captures his interest, he expresses it in his own unique and thoughtful way.

His drawings often feel like deep interpretations of the world he observes in his daily life. The precision and detailing in his work are truly remarkable and rare to see.

This Autism Awareness Day, 2nd April 2026—we arranged a place and Shreyan was asked to draw something. He drew a bike—and even tried to write on it. Although he is still learning to write, he makes sincere efforts to recreate what he sees, almost as if he is expressing his thoughts through both images and words.

A true story of life !
When little Ritesh entered his parents’ lives, they had no idea what autism was. Gradually, they became familiar with both autism and ADHD. Like any other parents, they dreamed that their son would speak, study, and grow up like other children—but the path was filled with challenges. During this difficult time, they found support in a few compassionate people who guided them on how to navigate the situation.

With immense patience and wisdom, his mother made relentless efforts to understand her son’s mind. Instead of focusing on what Ritesh could not do, she began to recognize and nurture what he *could* do. She discovered that he enjoyed sewing and could manage many of his daily tasks independently. She patiently taught him simple life skills like making tea, preparing an omelette, and much more. Before attending social events, she would prepare him through stories, helping him feel more comfortable in unfamiliar settings.

Today, she no longer feels the same fear when taking him out—she knows he will adapt. Ritesh now even goes trekking in the hills and forests, stepping beyond his familiar routines and embracing new experiences. As his mother spoke about his journey, her face reflected deep joy and pride, and we too felt a profound sense of admiration.

During this year’s Autism Day celebration on 2nd April, Ritesh sat quietly at a table, fully absorbed in sewing—something that brings him great happiness. Today, he stands as an example to many, showing that autism does not limit a person’s ability to achieve, to grow, and to find joy in life.

In every classroom, when a child behaves differently from others of the same age, it often stirs a range of emotions in teachers. Questions arise, uncertainty sets in, and at times, there is a feeling of helplessness. Teachers instinctively seek ways to better understand the child and support their parents, making it a matter of genuine concern and care.

With this in mind, the teachers at Unmesh felt a strong urge to create a meaningful introduction to the world of children with special needs. The session focused on classroom management and recognizing the needs of children who may not be typical but are uniquely different in their own ways.

Guided by our mission to help every child bloom and thrive in this beautiful world, we organized an interactive session featuring presentations and role plays. Through this, we aimed to share practical insights on how to respond to different situations, understand children with diverse abilities, and equip both educators and parents to support them more effectively.

This initiative was part of our Autism Awareness Month activities, led by Dr. Nandita Chatterjee, President of UNMESH and a renowned Developmental Pediatrician, and conducted by the dedicated special educators of our school.

**2nd April,2026**

On World Autism Awareness Day, we came together to celebrate individuals who are beautifully different—and wonderfully able. It was a day filled with emotion, strength, and quiet inspiration, as parents shared their journeys—the challenges they’ve faced, the paths they’ve walked, and the immense courage that has carried them forward.

In the smiles and expressions of our children, we were gently reminded of the pure love, innocence, and sweetness they bring into our lives. They teach us patience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of what it truly means to connect.

Our mentor and guide, Dr. Nandita Chatterjee, left us with words that will stay in our hearts:
“Go tell the world that our children are no less. They belong, and they have every right to be different. After all, each one of us is different in our own way. Having an autistic child is not something to be embarrassed about or discouraged by—it is an opportunity to show the world that we are building a more inclusive society, making this world kinder and more livable for all.”

Today, and every day, we celebrate not just awareness—but acceptance, love, and inclusion. 💙
