Empowering Livelihoods through Livestock: Rina Mistri's Journey in Sustainable Sheep Farming
Rina Mistri, a homemaker from Patghara village, has embarked on a transformative journey in livestock farming. With a vision to expand her livelihood, she enrolled in a training program on goat and sheep rearing at the Kanaikti Ramakrishna Sarada Sevashram Training Center, facilitated by Green College, from July 24 to August 24, 2024.
Prior to the training, Rina owned two goats, one sheep, and a small shelter for them. After completing the program, she strategically shifted her focus towards sheep farming—selling her goats to purchase two additional sheep. Through consistent care and management, her flock has since grown to 14 sheep.
Diversifying her efforts, Rina also rears five cows and approximately 40 poultry birds, including hens and ducks. To accommodate her growing livestock, she invested ₹45,000 in constructing a 220-square-feet farm structure using cement poles and asbestos roofing. Additionally, she developed a one-bigha (approximately 0.33 acre) grazing area adjacent to the farm.
Her efforts have already begun to yield results—she earns approximately ₹17,500 from the sale of just two sheep. Recognizing the potential for long-term income, Rina approached the Animal Husbandry Department of Hingalganj Block through Green College and successfully applied for a Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan. She is now covered under a loan of ₹31,895.
With ongoing guidance from Green College and the Hingalganj Block Livestock Development Officer (BLDO), Rina aspires to scale up her operations to raise 50 to 70 sheep commercially. Her goal is to make sheep farming a significant contributor to her family’s economic stability and improved quality of life.

Empowering Rural Livelihoods Through Livestock Training: A Case Study from Kalitala Village of Hingalganj Block under Sundarbans, West Bengal, India
Abstract:
This case study highlights the transformation of a rural livelihood through targeted vocational training in livestock management. It illustrates how structured intervention, combined with personal initiative, can lead to diversified income sources and rural economic development.
Introduction:
Devprasad Mandal, a resident of Kalitala village in Sundarbans, previously operated a small retail shop to support his household. With an interest in agriculture and animal husbandry, he participated in a month-long training program on Goat and Sheep Rearing in the month of September, 2024, conducted by Green College, RKMA, Narendrapur and supported by WHH, India at Malekan Ghumti Green College Training Centre.
Training and Initial Livestock Holdings: At the time of training, Mr. Mandal owned six goats, fourteen chickens, and three cows. The hands-on instruction provided through the program helped him recognize the commercial potential of goat farming, particularly for smallholder farmers in his region.
Enterprise Expansion: Motivated by the training of Green College, Mr. Mandal invested in the expansion of his goat-rearing activities. He constructed a 300 square-foot goat shed with a raised platform, investing approximately ₹23,000 ($275) to purchase additional goats. In parallel, he developed two and a half bighas ( # 0.83 acres) of land into a pond for aquaculture and established grazing areas on its banks.
Current Operations and Economic Impact: As of the latest update, Mr. Mandal manages a herd of 27 goats. Recently, he sold three goats for a total of ₹17,860 ($215), indicating promising returns. To support the expansion, he secured an agricultural loan of ₹90,000 ($1,085) and has applied for an additional Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan of ₹68,000 ($820), with facilitation from Green College of RKMA Hingalganj Project Office. He already got a green signal from the department of Animal Husbandry Govt. of WB and also processed by Bank.
Future Plans: Mr. Mandal envisions scaling his operation to accommodate 50 to 100 goats and establishing an integrated farm combining livestock, poultry and aquaculture. His trajectory exemplifies how rural entrepreneurship can be stimulated through targeted capacity building and access to institutional support.
Conclusion:
This case underscores the role of vocational training programs of Green College in fostering rural entrepreneurship and economic resilience. Mr. Mandal’s experience demonstrates how knowledge, coupled with access to credit and local resource management, can drive sustainable livelihood development in agrarian communities.
