Yesterday Peoples Green Society in association with Sarojini Naidu Girls College organised a lecture presentation on Clive House, Dumdum.

Main attraction was the presentation of Dr Shubho Majumdar, former SA Kolkata circle, who lead the second time excavation of the site in 2021 - 22. The site was earlier excavated by Dr Bimal Bandopadhyay of ASI, Kolkata Circle in two field seasons (2001-02 and 2002-03) and according to the excavator the excavation at Dum Dum mould revealed two cultural periodis and 7 major layers. Layers 1 and 2 belong to Period II, datable from c. 15th-16th century CE to modern period whille layers 3-7, marked as period I, range in date from the Early Historic (c. 2nd - 1st century BCE) to c.11th century CE. Layers 5 and 6 are mostly flood deposits mixed with habitation residues. The habitation deposit is approximately 3.50m thick and the virgin soil was traced. Another interesting thing mentioned by Dr Mazumdar was about Major General Thomas Hardwicke (1756 - 1835). Thomas was a Major General and passionate Indologist. He also stayed in this house and wrote a famous book called 'Illustration of Indian Zoology' after researching Indian zoology. In that book, a collection of 202 wonderful pictures of Indian animals is available. 11 animals are named after him scientifically. This renowned scientist created a museum with stuffed bodies and paintings of animals at 'Clive House' in Dum Dum. He donated all his collection to the 'Natural History Department of the British Museum'. Excavation brought out outstanding terracotta figurines including icon of Mahisasurmardini. Recovery of same kind of terracotta medallion alike Chandraketughar, and Dumdum site also brings the chances of similar kind of civilisation.

Today Chiara Rostagno, eminent architect and former Director, Museo Nazionale del Cenacolo Vinciano (The Last Supper Museum), Milan – and Team Leader of the monumental The Last Supper restoration project – delivered an outstanding presentation lecture on ‘Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper: A Timeless Archetype’ in the Seminar Hall of the Alipore Museum. It is needless to mention that our city does have a similar painting by Johann Zoffany, now on display in the St John’s Church, Kolkata. It was restored by INTACH in 2010.
