Who Really Donates?
Over the years of working in social service, I have realized one important truth: charity is not determined by wealth, status, or power—it is determined by compassion.
Many people assume that wealthy individuals, influential leaders, and powerful organizations are the biggest contributors to social causes. However, my experience has often shown something different.
In many cases, it is the middle-class families, daily wage workers, small business owners, farmers, teachers, and ordinary citizens who step forward to help those in need. They may not have abundant resources, but they contribute from the heart. Even a small donation from a hardworking individual often carries immense value because it comes with genuine concern for humanity.
At the same time, there is a growing perception that some large donations are made primarily for tax benefits, publicity, or corporate image-building. Of course, many generous philanthropists and organizations are genuinely committed to social welfare, and their contributions deserve appreciation. However, society also expects those with greater resources to play a larger role in helping the underprivileged.
As the Founder of Devanshu Lad Charitable Foundation, I personally approached approximately 150–170 current and former MLAs, MPs, and public representatives across Maharashtra, seeking support for our humanitarian activities, including medical assistance, ambulance services, food distribution, and welfare programs.
Unfortunately, many declined to support these initiatives. Some openly stated that they do not contribute to such causes. Only a handful of individuals extended meaningful support and demonstrated true concern for social welfare. To those few compassionate leaders, I express my sincere gratitude.
Another issue that deserves attention is the underutilization of public spaces and facilities funded through government schemes and public funds. In many places, government-owned properties remain unused or inaccessible while communities continue to struggle for basic healthcare and social services.
When we requested support in the form of space for medical assistance centers, dialysis facilities, ambulance operations, or community welfare projects, we often encountered a disappointing question:
"What benefit will we get from it?"
This question highlights a larger problem. Social service should not be measured by personal gain. The true benefit lies in saving lives, helping patients receive treatment, supporting students in need, and creating opportunities for vulnerable families.
Today, society does not need more promises—it needs action.
If every capable citizen, business leader, public representative, and organization contributes even a small part toward social welfare, together we can transform countless lives.
Because the true value of charity is not measured by the amount given, but by the intention behind it.
