Lotus Medical Foundation is a health based NGO operating in Kolhapur district since 1999. The main areas of focus are mother and child care, women empowerment, HIV/ AIDS Prevention & Rehabilitation, affordable and subsidized health services. Since 2007 Lotus Medical Foundation’s main thrust area is HIV/ AIDS epidemic, as we found out that Kolhapur District is a high pr
evalence district for HIV/AIDS. Our working involves, awareness, prevention to support and care of PLHIV (People living with HIV). The first targeted program was of “prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV” (PMTCT). The actual field exposure made us realize the stigma, inadequate treatment, exploitation and ignorance at large about HIV and AIDS. So the second step was to start a 12 bedded hospital – Care Center for them where we give food, medicines and proper medical care to needy patients free of the cost and proper orientation, Counseling of patients and relatives about diseases and living with HIV. We try to bring them in main stream of society. HIV till date has no recovery; hence prevention is the only tool for which we have launched “RED RIBBON CLUBS” in 100 villages. We increased our field activities regarding awareness, condom literacy, condoms availability, behavior change, communication activities. Volunteer’s participation, media communication & unconventional condom depots are established in these villages. The next phase was to tackle the Migrant population along with transgender s*x, male to male s*x and prostitution. These groups are identified, assured and counseled for proper care. Different awareness activities like – rally, mid media, lectures, essay competitions, group discussion, quiz competition, School Programs, poster exhibitions, wall writings, hoardings, cricket competitions and Rangoli competitions etc. are done.
