Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Wealth is a vital ingredient bestowed upon us for maintenance and progress in our life. It is much more than just having money. It means abundance in knowledge, skills and talents. Lakshmi is the energy that manifests as the complete spiritual and material well-being of a person.

Lakshmi is connected to Lakshya – the goal. She is the Shakti that directs you to your source, the goal of your life. There are eight aspects of this divine energy that may be bestowed upon us.

Adi Lakshmi is the memory of the source. When we forget that we are part of the entire creation, we feel small and insecure. Adi Lakshmi is that aspect which connects us to our source, bringing strength and calmness to the mind.

Dhana Lakshmi is the aspect of material wealth and Vidya Lakshmi is the aspect of knowledge, skills and talents.

Dhanya Lakshmi manifests as wealth in the form of food. There is a saying ‘jaise ann, waise man’ – implying that the food we eat has a direct impact on our mind. The right amount and type of food, eaten at the right time and place affects our body and mind positively.

Santana Lakshmi manifests as wealth in the form of progeny and creativity. People full of creativity, talented and skillful in the arts are bestowed with this aspect of Lakshmi. Dhairya Lakshmi manifests as wealth in the form of courage and Vijaya Lakshmi is the aspect that manifests as victory. Bhagya Lakshmi is the aspect of good luck and prosperity. At different stages in life, different aspects of this energy manifest in a person.

The puranas say that Lakshmi emerged from the waters along with the nectar when the ocean was churned by the devas and the asuras (signifying the churning of the mind between opposite values). When you have Lakshmi, the right type of wealth, then life is filled with nectar.

Wishing you all A Shubh Dhanteras... and Shubh Deepawali!

At this time of the year people around the world are getting ready to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights. One of the biggest festivals of the East.

And today is called “Dhanteras” – Dhanteras means the day of wealth.
It means feeling a sense of abundance, and whatever is needed will come! Remember all the blessings you have received in life and feel grateful for it.

The tradition is to put all the wealth you have earned in front of you and feel the abundance. When you feel lack, the lack grows but when you put your attention on abundance, then the abundance grows. In the Arthashastra, Chanakya says, “Dharmasya Moolam Arthah,” which means, “prosperity is the root of righteousness.”

'Diwali is the commemoration of the light of wisdom in our lives.'

Happy Dussehra!

Ravana as Ego: Sri Sri explains that Ravana, with his ten heads, symbolizes the different faces of ego and other negative tendencies of the mind.
Inner Burning: The act of burning the Ravana effigy is a spiritual practice to symbolically destroy these negative qualities within oneself, allowing for inner growth.
Victory over Negativity: Dussehra represents the victory of righteousness and truth over evil, leading to the triumph of one's inherent joy and purity.

The Significance of Navratri!
"The word ‘Ratri’ means deep rest or relief from three ‘tapas’, three types of fire or botherations- the physical, the subtle, and the conscious. A deep rest can relieve you from all these three botherations.
It’s a time of prayer and rejuvenation. A child is born in nine months. These nine days are like coming out of a mother’s womb once again. Having a new birth."
- Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Today it is very important for teachers to understand where the students stand and guide them from there at each step to the final goal. Here, we can learn from Lord Krishna in the way he takes Arjuna to the final destination in a step by step manner, with patience and love. In the beginning, Arjun was confused and he had a lot of questions.

As a student grows, he is bound to have plenty of confusion as his concepts continue to break. For example, we learn that the sun rises in the east. Later we learn how the planets really move. So a good teacher is available to guide the student through these questions that arise in the mind A good teacher knows this and guides the student through these confusions. And sometimes create confusion too when it is needed.

Teachers must strive for a delicate combination- firmness coupled with love. There are teachers who are very loving and others who are only strict. There are children who are rebellious and there are children who are timid and shy. The rebellious ones need encouragement and pats on the back. You should make them feel loved and cared for and a sense that they belong. But with the children who are shy and timid, you can be little firm to enable them to open up and speak. Be tough with them and also love. Often we do the reverse. Teachers act strictly with rebellious kids and become liberal with shy ones. Then their behavior patterns will not transform for the better. You need to be tough and sweet both, otherwise you won’t be able to guide the student to where you want to take them.

Happy Teacher’s Day!

Lord Ganesha symbolizes the universal, unborn, and formless consciousness within each of us, emphasizing that the form of Ganesha is a beautiful encapsulation of this divine energy to benefit devotees. He teaches that Ganesha is the "Lord of wisdom and consciousness" and that by worshiping his form, one can realize the formless spirit within. The various symbolic aspects of Ganesha, such as his large belly for acceptance, his elephant head for strength, and his mouse vehicle for overcoming ignorance, are meant to be understood as deeper spiritual lessons rather than just physical attributes.

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Ashtami is significant as it indicates a perfect balance between the seen and the unseen aspects of reality – the visible material world and the invisible spiritual realm.

Krishna’s birth on Ashtami signifies his mastery of both the spiritual and material worlds. He is a great teacher and a spiritual inspiration as well as the consummate politician. On one hand, he is Yogeshwara (the Lord of Yoga – the state which every yogi aspires), while on the other, he is a mischievous thief.

Krishna’s teachings are most relevant to our times, in the sense that they neither let you get lost in material pursuits, nor make you completely withdrawn. They rekindle your life – from being a burnt-out and stressed personality to a more centred and dynamic one. Krishna teaches us devotion with skill. To celebrate Gokulashtami is to imbibe extremely opposite yet compatible qualities into your own life.

India is home to diverse cultures, languages, cuisines, practices and beliefs. Despite the vast differences that arise every few kilometers within the country, she has prospered and moved ahead. She seamlessly blends the Vedas with science and technology. She and her people have long respected saints and people of wisdom from every tradition and background.

She has shown us that the essence of religion is spirituality – the core values of compassion, caring and acceptance. She has been showing us that when we realize the beauty of our spiritual essence, our conceptual rigidities dissolve and pave the path for the true blossoming of the human consciousness.

So, it is time we resolve to broaden our vision through spirituality and deepen our roots through a greater understanding of our traditions, culture and value systems. Let us truly begin to walk the path of inner freedom for a greater, peaceful, violence-free, and stress-free tomorrow.

Happy Independence Day !
