(Madhuri Sahasrabudhe)
*अवंती दीक्षित* (Avanti Dixit)
*उर्मिला जोशी* (Urmila Joshi)
*शीतल देशपांडे* (Sheetal Deshpande)

What a wild turn our journey took…

We never expected things to twist the way they did at the Phoo Du border. Google marked it as a functioning international crossing, and with our eVisas in hand, we figured everything was set. But when we arrived, the border officers hit us with a surprise—we weren’t allowed to cross. Turns out, that particular checkpoint only accepts travelers with visa stamps in their passports, not eVisas.

The kicker? The nearest border that does accept eVisas was nearly 580 km away—about a 10-hour drive through mountainous roads. We were completely caught off guard. With no other immediate options, we had to put our plans on hold and search for a place to stay. After a bit of digging, we found shelter at Phurua Resort—a humble place in an unfamiliar area, but we were just grateful to have a roof over our heads.

Following Google Maps to the border had its own drama. At the signage of right turn , it told us to take a right turn over a steep road having almost 15 degrees of inclination and as we turned to cross the road we hit the divider which was not visible to us .Our front tyre hit it, but luckily, we escaped without any damage leaving the scratch on the divider. We reversed, drove a few kilometers to find a U-turn, and eventually got back on track toward the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge. Just when we thought we were past the worst, a couple on a motorcycle suddenly crossed from left to right just from the front of our car ..with a sudden brake we could save us and the couple as well
—it was a narrow, heart-pounding miss. Another close call.

What was supposed to be a straightforward border crossing was now spiraling. Still hopeful, we reached to the Nong Khai border . We parked, queued up at immigration, and handed over our documents and car papers. And then—another setback. The officers told us flat-out: we couldn’t drive our car into Laos. No clear explanation.

Frustrated, we stepped away to clear our heads from the negation and two narrow escapes we drove away from the border some 15 kms away and entered a juice centre ..Till then we received a call from the embassy officials .They advised us to return and mention their reference at the border. We did—but this time, the officials were outright dismissive. They wouldn’t even listen, pointing to a form we had received earlier at the Betong border. It needed a stamp, they said—but back then, we were told just having the form would be enough.

By that point, we were physically and emotionally spent. We checked into a hotel nearby and decided to head back to Bangkok the next day to regroup and rethink our plans.

What was meant to be a simple border crossing became a powerful reminder: the borders have their own minds. And sometimes, it’s the unexpected detours that leave the most lasting stories.

We met Rohini Takalkar and her family from HSS . We had an opportunity to visit the site of a building that had collapsed in the recent earthquake. The govt here isn’t just handling rescue ops—they've also set up food and massage camps for the tireless rescue workers. It's worth learning from the government about their disaster management.We got to visit one of these camps—set up for the relaxation of teams working round the clock. It was an unimaginable experience watching them still clearing debris and searching for remains...

The next day, we were all set to cross into Laos... but a big twist awaited us at the border!

More on that soon!

We entered Thailand through the Betong border(Jabatan immigration Malaysia )! Normally it's a very small, quiet border with hardly any vehicles crossing — that's why we chose it. But what we saw was completely different! It was as crowded as a market!
Because of Songkran, the Thai New Year festival, the usually calm border was overflowing with people. The systems weren't working properly, and the officials were struggling to manage the crowd.
Thailand welcomed us with rains .

Singapore So Far

We arrived in Singapore with hearts full of purpose—and what a heartwarming journey it has turned out to be! Right from day one, we were embraced by the vibrant, close-knit Indian community here. A beautiful blend of cultures, languages, and shared values, it felt like finding family across borders.

One of the standout moments was our meeting with Dr. Shilpak Ambule, High Commissioner of India to Singapore, and Mrs. Pooja Tillu, Deputy High Commissioner. Our conversation with them was truly enriching .

We were also incredibly fortunate to be hosted by Maithilee Kale and her wonderful family. What began as a short visit turned into a 19-day stay, owing to a delay in the arrival of our car from Chennai. Through it all, Maithilee welcomed us with unmatched warmth and generosity. She didn’t just open her home—she became our anchor, guide, and constant support.

During those days, she played a pivotal role in helping us connect with mothers and families across Singapore. With her help, we reached out to diverse communities and engaged in heartfelt, meaningful conversations. Through these interactions, we witnessed the strength, spirit, and cultural richness of so many women who nurture their families while staying deeply rooted in their values.

Every interaction—whether formal dialogues or casual chai-time chats—left a lasting impression. We had the opportunity to engage with Malay and Chinese mothers and their families, learning about their unique cultures, parenting approaches, and family systems. These exchanges broadened our understanding and deepened our appreciation for Singapore’s beautiful diversity.

As we wrap up this little lengthy chapter of our journey, our hearts are filled with gratitude—for the love, stories, support, and powerful sense of community we experienced.

From the Himalayas to the High Seas!

After completing our incredible Bhutan journey, it was time to return to India and drive down to Chennai — the final stop before our car sets sail for Singapore!

What followed was a memorable road trip from Guwahati to Chennai, with charming halts at Pakur, Bhubaneswar, Vishakhapatnam, Nellore, and more. We soaked in spiritual energy at Konark and Puri, enjoyed serene campus stays, and were blessed with darshan of Shri Shankaracharyaji at Kanchi Kamakoti Math.

A special highlight was meeting our dear group members and family friends in Chennai — their warmth made our send-off even more special.

Finally, with full hearts and countless memories, we handed over our beloved car at Chennai Port — ready for its next adventure across the sea to Singapore!
With the car keys handed over, we now await our car’s arrival at the Singapore port. In the meantime, we flew into Singapore, where our dear and gracious host, Maithilee Kale, gave us the warmest welcome at Changi Airport. Grateful to begin this chapter with such kindness!

Living with a Bhutanese Family – A Lesson in Simplicity

Our stay in a humble home at URA, has been nothing short of beautiful. Our host,Sherring , who lost her husband two years ago, stands as a quiet symbol of strength and resilience. She now runs a small homestay and supports herself through farming. Life here is simple, yet deeply fulfilling.

The home was warm—not just because of the bukhari (wood stove), but because of the kindness in the air. No fancy dining tables—meals, always prepared with love, are shared on the floor or small stools.

URA itself is peaceful, clean, and deeply rooted in tradition. People greet you with a gentle bow, and there’s a quiet reverence for their beloved King and his vision of happiness.

As we roamed around in the village, we met several kind-hearted mothers. Though strangers, they welcomed us like family. One elderly lady simply took us straight to her home and gave us a chance to enjoy traditional butter tea and cookies.

Bhutan is already teaching us so much—about gratitude, community, and the many forms happiness can take. This journey isn’t just about travel; it’s about learning how people live with balance and joy.

More stories to come—stay with us!

Setting Foot in Bhutan – Our First Stop

Our journey has officially begun, and the first country we arrived in is Bhutan—a land of mountains, monasteries, and an unmistakable sense of peace.

We spent our first night in Paro, a beautiful valley town surrounded by lush green mountains. The air here is crisp and fresh, and the people welcome you with warm smiles. Hospitality is a way of life in Bhutan, and we could feel it in every interaction.

The homes here are simple yet full of warmth. Families eat together while sitting on small wooden stools—there are no dining tables, just a cozy, shared space. Traditional Bhutanese food is nourishing and comforting. We were welcomed with suja (butter tea), dry roasted rice, and homemade cookies. A wonderful start to our journey!

We also began picking up a few Bhutanese words. Kuzuzangpo la (hello) and Kadrin chhe la (thank you) are our new favorite phrases! Learning a new language, even just a few words, helps us connect better with the people we meet.

One of the most meaningful experiences of our journey so far has been staying with a local Bhutanese family. Four generations under one roof—a mother, her daughter, her 7-year-old son, and her elderly mother. It was a privilege to be welcomed into their home and see how they live, work, and care for each other.
Our adventure in Bhutan has just begun, and we can’t wait to explore more. Stay with us as we share stories of the families we meet along the way

Carrying goodwill of everyone from Delhi, we first halted at Lucknow, where we had the honour of meeting the Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel. She graciously wished us success for our onward journey.

We then made our way to Darbhanga in Bihar followed by a meaningful halt in Siliguri. A heartfelt thanks to the Siliguri Institute of Technology for hosting an interactive session with their faculty and parents. We had some thought-provoking conversations about motherhood and the changing family system.

From there, we made our way into Bhutan via the welcoming town of Phuentsholing, opening the door to a brand new chapter in our adventure.

Stay tuned—we can’t wait to share the magic of our journey through Bhutan with you!
