“While one is young is the time to investigate, to experiment with everything. The school should help its young people to discover their vocations and responsibilities, and not merely cram their minds with facts and technical knowledge; it should be the soil in which they can grow without fear.”
― Jiddu Krishnamurti

Sholai School is open for admissions for the upcoming academic year.

Happy harvests from the Sholai student farm 🌿🧺

Tomatoes, Ridge gourd and Bitter gourd, as well as some beautiful red Rosella fruits.

There's so much joy in growing food, from following the process of nurturing crops from seed to fruit, and so much appreciation and gratitude, when it's time for harvest.

There's a special connection to the food you eat, when you've grown it yourself. We nurture this connection, everyday, at Sholai.

Sholai school is an educational community set within the campus of the Centre for Learning, Organic Agriculture and Appropriate Technology (CLOAAT).

Sholai is a residential school in the sylvan valley of the Palani Hills, in Kodaikanal. It is surrounded by reserve forests, where we practice living in harmony with nature.

We follow a holistic approach to education, inspired by the teachings of J. Krishnanmurti. To achieve balance between intellectual, emotional and physical development, we include classes such as Food and Nutrition, Yoga, Woodwork, Music and Organic Farming. Our school is registered with the Cambridge International Examinations board and we offer exams at the higher levels.

CLOAAT is supported by our community of workers, mostly from neighbouring villages, who have been integral to building the school and maintaining our campus. Our community includes builders, carpenters, a mechanical department, farm workers and kitchen staff. The CLOAAT campus includes 3 hostels, an auditorium, a swimming pool, a sports field, science labs, staff accommodation, a dining hall, vegetable gardens, fruit trees and coffee estate, as well as bio-gas plants, a micro-hydro, solar power units and numerous classrooms spread over the campus.

We live completely off-the-grid, deriving all our energy needs from the various appropriate technologies we have on site. We also follow rainwater harvesting practices and recycle our own waste.

Sholai School welcomes children from a variety of backgrounds - geographical, social and economic - including students from the surrounding villages. We offer scholarships to those who cannot afford the full fees. This helps us create an inclusive learning environment, integrated with the local community.

At Sholai CLOAAT we emphasize the importance of sensitivity and awareness, in our relationships, and towards our natural environment. It is intended to be a space of sharing and learning, for all ages and backgrounds, to explore together creative and conscious ways of living. We hope to inspire a movement towards creating regenerative and life-enhancing systems.

The Krishnamurti Retreat held last month at Sholai brought together a diverse group of participants, across age groups, professions and different parts of India.

The retreat which had Krishnamurti's teachings and the Bohmian Dialogue at its heart, created a space where the participants could inquire into themes such as consciousness, intelligence and the future of humanity in this rapidly changing world, whilst being in a mindful state of awareness.

The retreat was supported by the serene beauty of the Sholai campus, along with its timeless silence. Participants and facilitators appreciated the co-created environment which allowed for deep inquiry, dialogue and reflection.

We look forward to hosting more Krishnamurti Retreat in the future.

The Twin Garage Project

This project involved students, and teachers working together to build the roof for the twin garage (to home the mini-van and other vehicles).

The project started in August 2017 and involved different students taking part during their senior engineering classes over the years.

In the first phase, the roof trusses were made and assembled. Then, in the second phase, they were dismantled (each weighing 120+ kgs) and carried to the site and reassembled one by one on the main building.

This was followed by the last phase to complete the roof structure. After the 6 trusses were reassembled, connecting pieces were installed one by one to give stability, strength and form to the roof.

Here you can see the result of this collaborative process of working together!

Happy Diwali from the Sholai community ✨

As per the Sholai tradition, we celebrated Diwali together as a community, in the days before the students and teachers took their Diwali break.

The festivities included a wholesome and nourishing feast shared with all members of the community, including the farm workers, carpenters, masons, builders, students, teachers, volunteers and guests.

A big part of the spirit of the gathering is to celebrate and express gratitude to the workers, who form the backbone of the community, and allow it to thrive.

We also celebrated with enchanting and lovely music and dance performances shared by students and teachers, for the whole community to enjoy.

We wish for peace and light to all this Diwali ✨🕯️
