Rotary Cochin International (RCI) which was formed in 2002, and chartered under Rotary District 3201, is an organization of like-minded professionals who empathize strongly with the cause of the special children, their families and the dedicated specialists who work with them, to make a difference in their lives. RCI is very active in the field of community service, where we have executed several projects over the years to benefit the disadvantaged sections of our society. We have donated a Dialysis unit to Aluva Taluk hospital, built a Neonatal ICU and an Immunisation Centre at Women and Child Hospital, Mattanchery, among a few. SUPPORT TO SPECIAL CHILDREN About three percent of all children born, irrespective of country, race, colour or ethnic origin arrive in this world as a special child, a fact which is sadly not acknowledged thus by the mainstream society. Instead they are considered as a problem due to adult ignorance, social taboos, parental embarrassment and most importantly, the absence of sufficient number of specialists to deal with this children. However, in the last 30 years, our country has slowly mobilized resources to address the needs of these children, albeit insufficiently. The bulk of the contribution towards such resources has been from dedicated individuals and NGOs who have worked tirelessly towards setting up various channels for the rehabilitation of these children, in addition to enlightening society through championing their cause. RCI β BHAVANA Our flagship community service project, BHAVANA, since 2004, is a unique cultural festival for the SPECIAL children of Kerala, providing a public platform for them to display their talents and instill confidence in them, and has completed its 10th annual edition. In addition, BHAVANA also helps to focus the attention of public and the media, on the insufficiently recognized capabilities of these children, and improve their image in society. BHAVANA is the one and only cultural festival for the special children of Kerala, with participation by more than 800 differently abled children from over 35 special schools and their teachers, and will culminate in a grand award ceremony to recognize the creative talents amongst the special children. The complete program has been conceived and designed by RCI. The next edition is planned on 25th January 2015 and the venue is ASSISI VIDYANIKETHAN PUBLIC SCHOOL, Chembumukku, Kakkanadu.
