Centre for Environmental Efficiency

Centre for Environmental Efficiency How to bring environment and development hand in hand by taking the confidence of the society is a looming problem of the 21st century.

Centre for Environmental Efficiency is a Public Trust constituted to propagate the theories of Environmental Efficiency and Carrying Capacity which are two strong indicators for the rightful environmental management from Global Level to Local Level. Population explosion, depletion of fossil fuel reserves, global warming, under-performing ecosystems and extinction of species need urgent attention.

Workable solutions are the need of the hour to protect ourselves and our generations. As per the UN statistics by the year 2030, nearly 60% of the world population are going to be accommodated in cities. Cities are the centres of order if managed efficiently or it can be centres of chaos otherwise. Hence effective environment management solutions at city/metropolitan area level has substantial contribution for the sustainability of the ecologically overshooting earth. Two strong indicators of sustainability have been formulated based on UN and Global Footprint Network sustainability research. These indicators are Environmental Efficiency (EE) and Carrying Capacity(CC) which are evolved from three important terms of sustainability. They are as follows.
1. Human Development Index of UNDP (HDI)
2. Biocapacity (Bc) and
3. Ecological Footprint (EFp) of GFN
Environmental Efficiency(EE) is evolved based on an output/input approach while carrying capacity is evolved based on stock/consumption and it shall not be less than one on sustainability considerations. World Countries’ analysis has been carried out based on UNDP&GFN data to demonstrate its effectiveness and based on which some international environment management tips are proposed. Using the possibilities of Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing, it is possible to prepare the EE and CC maps of the city/metropolitan regions based on proxy indicators which can effectively be used for achieving environmentally efficient development management systems. This NGO stands for this cause, to propagate and further develop the idea of Environmental Efficiency and Carrying Capacity for achieving local to global sustainability and prosperity. EE&CC are further improvised as ‘may value’ and ‘ton value’ contributing to intra-generational and inter-generational sustainability. These management systems are highly useful to achieve post-COVID resurgence. Yes world has to move from GDP oriented-linear economy to EE-oriented circular economy. To read more, visit

Season’s Greetings for a Balanced World
Peace and joy flourish where balance exists — within us and around us.
As we celebrate Christmas and welcome the New Year, let us honour the harmony between nature and life. A balanced mind grows from a balanced body, nourished by clean air, pure water, and wholesome food drawn from unspoiled earth. When we nurture our environment with care, we nurture our own well-being.
May this festive season inspire every heart and home to live lightly, breathe deeply, eat purely, move freely, and protect the planet that sustains our peace and joy.
Merry Christmas & A Sustainable New Year!

Environment versus Development: These are piecemeal ways of taking decisions. We need holistic approaches as a nation evaluating the biological capacity of nations versus ecological footprints leading to corrective and sustainable decisions. Also how much it contributes to human welfare and progress. Image Source:Shekhar Kate in Linkedin

Wars arise from distressed minds. Peace emerges from a calm mind, which stems from a balanced body with fewer stress hormones and more happy hormones. Humanity needs clean air, clean water, and unadulterated food to achieve a balanced mind and body. Wars worsen global depletion.
Global to Local environmental management under EE&CC umbrella is the easiest and most practical solution to deal with this overshooting earth phenomenon. We have to achieve the contained earth through strategies and technologies. These are my thoughts for today. Think about it. Image Source Reuters.

There is only one crisis the world faces: Mother Earth is crying, unable to cope with humanity’s irresponsible consumption trends, despite humans being her custodians. According to Global Footprint Network calculations, Earth is in overshoot; as of today, we need 1.75 Earths, yet we have only one. Earth cannot fully sequester the greenhouse gases we emit into the atmosphere, causing global warming and climate change. Climate change disrupts total equilibrium, leading to a series of crises: new microorganisms are created—some harmful to us; the air we breathe, water we drink, and food we eat are polluted or adulterated, resulting in stress hormones rather than happy hormones. Thus, there is an intrinsic reason behind all the chaos prevalent in the world. The holistic solution is to address the overshoot by bringing consumption down within Earth’s capacity (biological capacity). How many will agree with this hypothesis? Just think about it.

This lecture was delivered at 40th National Convention of Architectural Engineers at Kochi held on Oct 9,10.
It is seen that even after 10 years of launching SDGs, SDG 11 is listed only as one among the 17 SDGs while SDG 11 with effective indicators can crack the whole world crisis in a single shot in a check and balance manner. All the 16 SDGs can simultaneously be attained.

The Fortieth National Convention of Architectural Engineers, organized by the Architectural Engineering Division Board of The Institution of Engineers (India), was successfully hosted by the IEI Kochi Local Centre on the 9th and 10th of October 2025. I had the honour of serving as the General Convener of the Convention, with my organisation, the Centre for Environmental Efficiency, acting as the Knowledge Partner. The Greater Cochin Development Authority was our esteemed partner for the event.
The convention’s technical programmes were structured within the framework of Environmental Efficiency for Sustainable Cities, aligning with the central theme, “Sustainable Cities – Strategies and Technologies.”

If cities truly prioritized hassle-free pedestrianisation and non-motorized transport, urban life would feel almost heavenly. Fossil fuel–driven diseases would decline, while walking and cycling would naturally boost our bodies with happy chemicals. Local economies would thrive on healthier, people-friendly streets. Instead, what we see today is a slow death of cities and citizens alike—while fuel pumps and the hospital industry continue to flourish and governments claim better GDP. GDP way of progress calculations are to be replaced with EE&CC calculations to get the real situation whether the system is progressing or declining.
