Centre for Environmental Efficiency How to bring environment and development hand in hand by taking the confidence of the society is a looming problem of the 21st century.

Centre for Environmental Efficiency is a Public Trust constituted to propagate the theories of Environmental Efficiency and Carrying Capacity which are two strong indicators for the rightful environmental management from Global Level to Local Level. Population explosion, depletion of fossil fuel reserves, global warming, under-performing ecosystems and extinction of species need urgent attention.

Workable solutions are the need of the hour to protect ourselves and our generations. As per the UN statistics by the year 2030, nearly 60% of the world population are going to be accommodated in cities. Cities are the centres of order if managed efficiently or it can be centres of chaos otherwise. Hence effective environment management solutions at city/metropolitan area level has substantial contribution for the sustainability of the ecologically overshooting earth. Two strong indicators of sustainability have been formulated based on UN and Global Footprint Network sustainability research. These indicators are Environmental Efficiency (EE) and Carrying Capacity(CC) which are evolved from three important terms of sustainability. They are as follows.
1. Human Development Index of UNDP (HDI)
2. Biocapacity (Bc) and
3. Ecological Footprint (EFp) of GFN
Environmental Efficiency(EE) is evolved based on an output/input approach while carrying capacity is evolved based on stock/consumption and it shall not be less than one on sustainability considerations. World Countries’ analysis has been carried out based on UNDP&GFN data to demonstrate its effectiveness and based on which some international environment management tips are proposed. Using the possibilities of Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing, it is possible to prepare the EE and CC maps of the city/metropolitan regions based on proxy indicators which can effectively be used for achieving environmentally efficient development management systems. This NGO stands for this cause, to propagate and further develop the idea of Environmental Efficiency and Carrying Capacity for achieving local to global sustainability and prosperity. EE&CC are further improvised as ‘may value’ and ‘ton value’ contributing to intra-generational and inter-generational sustainability. Centre for Environmental Efficiency wishes everyone a very Happy and Proud Independence Day! 🇮🇳

India has come a long way, and we have much to celebrate. Yet, true independence in spirit calls upon us to achieve much more.

Real independence will be achieved when India is truly self-reliant, and when our people are recognised not as liabilities, but as our greatest assets. People become assets when their human development, capabilities and personality are nurtured to their fullest potential—while achieving the highest quality of life with the least possible consumption of resources.

We look forward to an India that achieves “Quality Independence”—an India where equitable human development, resource efficiency, dignity and collective well-being go hand in hand.

Earth Overshoot Day is the date on which humanity’s demand for ecological resources and ecosystem services in a given year exceeds what the Earth can regenerate during that year.

Over the past 25 years, Earth Overshoot Day has shifted from 10 September 2002 to 30 July 2026, showing how rapidly humanity is consuming the Earth’s regenerative capacity.

These calculations are based on the methodology of the Global Footprint Network (GFN), led by Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, using data from the United Nations. Our research builds upon UNDP Human Development Report (HDR) calculations and GFN Ecological Footprint calculations, adapting them from the global level to the local level. Ecological overshoot is the reason behind climate change and all associated problems like flood,drought,landslide,glacier melting,ocean acidification, pandemics and even wars. Year after year, humanity’s ecological footprint continues to rise. This year, humanity is consuming resources equivalent to 1.73 Earths, even though we have only one Earth. The situation is becoming increasingly critical as ecological overshoot triggers a cascade of interconnected environmental, economic, and social problems.

In reality, there is only one fundamental problem: humanity’s consumption has exceeded the Earth’s biological capacity to regenerate its natural resources and absorb our waste. Almost every major global challenge—from climate change, biodiversity loss, and deforestation to water scarcity, soil degradation, pollution, food insecurity, and resource conflicts—can be traced back to this single underlying imbalance.

Until humanity learns to live within the Earth’s biological limits, we will continue treating the symptoms while the root cause remains unaddressed.

As cities and regions face increasing climate risks, protecting and restoring forest ecosystems must become a fundamental component of sustainable spatial planning. Achieving SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities depends equally on conserving biodiversity-rich regions that sustain them.
