The Mehac team in Alappuzha conducted a program on women’s mental health for Anganwadi teachers and their assistants as part of the ‘Jwala Samagra Sureksha’ initiative under ICDS, in observance of Women’s Day. The programme was attended by 49 participants, including teachers, the ICDS supervisor and members of the local Panchayat.
It covered various aspects of women’s mental health and was delivered through role-plays, storytelling and shared experiences. The participants found it highly useful and shared positive feedback on the relevance of the topic. While they regularly attend trainings on other subjects, a few noted that this was their first exposure to a program focused specifically on women’s mental well-being, which was greatly appreciated.

To make our capacity-building sessions on su***de prevention more engaging, we incorporate ice-breaking activities that allow participants to relax and connect, even while addressing a serious topic. The sessions are highly interactive, providing an opportunity to engage with community workers, understand their existing awareness of su***de related issues and build their confidence in addressing this subject.
A key focus of our sessions is strengthening knowledge around referral pathways for individuals at risk of su***de and ensuring that participants are aware of the support systems available for those experiencing suicidal ideation.

Amidst busy work schedules, the Mehac team took a refreshing break with a day outing to a resort in Idukki. Surrounded by nature, the day was filled with good food, great company and a variety of activities like kayaking and zip-lining.
As professionals working in the field of mental health, it was also a valuable opportunity to step away from the routine, reset and care for our own well-being. It was also a chance to connect with one another and simply enjoy the moment. A much needed pause that left the team refreshed and with many memories to cherish.

We are thrilled that our pilot mushroom farm, launched in collaboration with the founders of the Alappuzha based organisation ‘Coon Fresh’ and the Muhamma Panchayat, is flourishing! The project was chosen for its minimal space and labour requirements, ease of training of manpower and short crop turnaround time.
The farm is actively maintained by members of the community, who are closely involved in its day-to-day care and growth. The mushrooms have been distributed within the local community and have been warmly received.
Beyond skill building, this marks a promising start towards this small-scale, community-led enterprise.

Representing Mehac Foundation, Founder and Managing Trustee Dr. Chitra Venkateswaran and Program Manager Ms. Meiya Varghese, along with Home Again Lead Ms. Jiya Laj, participated in a collaborative meeting convened by The Banyan, bringing together partner organisations and district teams to reflect on the Emergency Care & Recovery Centre (ECRC) and Home Again initiatives. The gathering provided an opportunity to review research, discuss employment pathways and examine emerging questions around licensing in supported community living. It also served as a platform for sharing knowledge and innovations, strengthening efforts to advance evidence-based, dignity-centred care.

The event also featured panel discussions bringing government and civil society into dialogue on crisis care, recovery, housing and sustainability.

Our Founder and Managing Trustee, Dr. Chitra Venkateswaran was part of one such discussion on ‘Advancing Dignity-Centered Care for Homeless Persons with Mental Health Issues’, where she spoke about Mehac’s success in building strong partnerships with local Panchayats in Kerala, and the way forward to build sustainable mental health projects within the community.

Mehac Foundation is delighted to share that our Founder and Managing Trustee, Dr. Chitra Venkateswaran, was recently featured in an in-depth conversation with author and journalist K. A. Beena on the platform ‘Beena Kanda Lokam’.

In this reflective interview, Dr. Chitra speaks about her early years and the journey that led her to psychiatry. She traces her gradual and deeply personal engagement with Kerala’s palliative care movement and how this eventually laid the foundation for the vision behind Mehac Foundation. Dr. Chitra also discusses the philosophy behind Mehac’s work, particularly the integration of palliative care principles into mental healthcare. The interview sheds light on Mehac’s working model, highlighting how strong partnerships within the community have been integral to both its success and sustainability.
In the course of the conversation, Dr. Chitra shares reflections from her years of working closely with communities and speaks about how mental health awareness has gradually evolved over time. The interview is an inspiring window into the commitment, vision and passion of our Founder, which have been and remain the driving force behind Mehac Foundation.

This conversation is the first in a two-part interview series, with Part 2 to be broadcast shortly. Watch Part 1 at the link below:

As part of our ongoing efforts to create learning and skill-building opportunities for the local community, Mehac Foundation collaborated with The Banyan to conduct a jewellery-making workshop at Muhamma, Alappuzha. The workshop was held as part of a project supported by HLL Lifecare Limited and was attended by our clients, caregivers and local ASHAs. The session was received with great enthusiasm, with participants remaining actively engaged throughout and creating several beautiful pieces of jewellery.

We sincerely thank the trainers from The Banyan for their patience and support, which played a key role in making the session a success.
