As part of our continuing efforts to strengthen awareness around su***de prevention, Mehac Foundation conducted an interactive session for first year students at Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology, Palakkad. The session explored warning signs, risk factors, recognising when someone may be at risk and offering responsible support as a peer. Students participated openly, approaching the discussion with empathy, a non-judgemental attitude and an understanding grounded more in facts than myths.
Based on the students’ responses, the facilitators observed a strong willingness to stand by and actively support a friend experiencing difficulties. The discussion also highlighted the importance of going beyond peer support by helping a friend reach a trusted adult or professional when needed.

A session on Mental Health, Stress and Crisis Management was conducted for women trainees of Futurepoint, an IBS Foundation initiative. The interactive session covered stress management, emotional wellbeing, self-care and team building.Through practical exercises and role plays, the session helped equip participants with practical skills to manage stress, communicate effectively and enhance their overall wellbeing.

Dr. Poornima Sunder, Program Director and Consultant Psychiatrist at Mehac Foundation, participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Systems in Motion: Practice, Evidence and Reality’ on 27 June.
The session was part of a course conducted by Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health which explores population-level approaches to mental health care with a strong emphasis on preventive and promotive frameworks.
During the discussion, Dr. Poornima presented an overview of Mehac’s journey in building community mental health systems through sustained community engagement, collaboration, and a rights-based approach. The session provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, reflect on lessons from practice, and explore how communities, service providers, and local systems can work together to create more inclusive and sustainable mental health care.

Mehac Foundation is delighted to share that our Founder and Managing Trustee, Dr. Chitra Venkateswaran has been honoured with the first ever Keraliyam – N.R. Harikumar Award at a ceremony held at Thiruvananthapuram. The award was instituted by the Global Kerala Initiative – Keraliyam in memory of its Founder Secretary General, N.R. Harikumar, on the occasion of his first death anniversary.

Dr. Chitra is being recognised for her exceptional contributions across the intersecting domains of psychiatry, mental health and community-based palliative care.

Mehac Foundation held a session for the parents of children with special needs at at St. Antony’s Special School, Ayyampuzha. Around 19 parents attended the sesssion, along with teaching staff.

The interactive session focused on understanding the needs of children with special needs, behaviour management, caregiver wellbeing and positive parenting. It also highlighted the importance of patients, acceptance and consistent support in promoting the well-being and development of children with special needs.
Parents actively shared their concerns and the challenges they faced in caregiving, with several parents requesting similar programmes in the future.

As part of the ‘Jwala Samagra Sthree Suraksha Project’ under the Kavalam Grama Panchayat, a mental health awareness session was conducted for 36 girls aged 10–17 years.
The session focused on understanding mental health, managing stress, emotional well-being, healthy coping strategies and the importance of seeking support when needed. Interactive discussions and group activities enabled participants to explore common challenges faced by adolescents, including academic pressure, social media stress, self-esteem concerns, and interpersonal difficulties.
