Doyen of Konkani movement, Padmashree Awardee, Sri Narayana Purushothama Mallaya (97) passed away at his residence on 11-09-2026. His research and strong presentation before Mahajan Commission for the independent roots of Konkani language facilitated in the inclusion of VIIIth Schedule of our Constitution. He also brought to the fore the contribution of Konkani physicians Appu Bhat, Ranga Bhat and Vinayaka Pandit in the making of 12 volume medicinal treatise Hortus Indicus Malabaricus during Dutch rule of Kochi in the 17th century.

An ardent devotee of Shree Kashi Math Samasthan, he belongs to the lineage of the Poorvashram family of Shrimad Varadendra Tirtha Swamiji past Mathadhipathi of Shree Kashi Math Samsthan.

Sri Mallaya has taken responsibility in many social institutions under the guidance of Shrimad Sudheendra Thirtha Swamiji, Mathadhipathi of Shree Samsthan. He was the founder President of Gowda Saraswath Brahmana Mahasabha instituted by Swamiji in 1984 and continued in that post for more than four decades. He also served as Vice-President of Dr Padiar Memorial Homeopathic Medical College, a century old premium institution under Shree Samsthan.

He was conferred with Padmashree award in 2015 considering his outstanding contribution to the Konkani movement. He is also receipient of Sahitya Academy Awards and many such literary awards.

A well wisher of Anugraha Charitable Trust, he was honored during the Konkani Manyata Diwas celebration in 2010 and with the first Smt Vimala Pai award instituted by World Konkani Kendra on 19-11-2011, both functions organised by our Trust at Kochi.

Board of Trustees and all members of the Trust paid their homage to him at his residence and pray for his Sadgadhi.
