Founded in 1967, "Keral Banga Samskriti Sangha" (KBSS) has blossomed into a vibrant cultural and charitable hub—offering Bengalis in Kochi a comforting sense of home, far from home. Registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific, Cultural and Charitable Societies Registration Act on 31st August 1971, the Sangha functions as a non-profit society dedicated to preserving and celebrating
diverse traditions. Though located nearly a thousand kilometers from its homeland, the Sangha has flourished as a second home for its members—fostering belonging while embracing the local culture with remarkable ease. Its calendar is marked by vibrant festivities such as Kerala’s Onam, celebrated in traditional attire; Bengali New Year; the birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore; and Indian Independence Day—each serving as a cornerstone of communal spirit and cultural pride. The most anticipated celebration is Sharodiya Durga Puja, a sacred festival for Bengalis. In keeping with tradition, artisans—including idol sculptors, dhakis (drummers), priests, and cooks—are invited from Bengal to retain the authentic essence of the rituals. Other cherished observances include Laxmi Puja, Shyama Puja, Deepawali, Saraswati Puja, and Holi, each enriching the cultural tapestry of the Sangha. True to its name, the Sangha remains deeply committed to showcasing Bengal’s literary legacy, honouring legendary figures who have shaped its rich cultural narrative. Equally vital is its humanitarian mission. The association, along with its individual members, regularly extends financial and material support to those in need—including residents of recognized relief canters—affirming that the joy of giving is its own form of celebration.
