The Smt. Y.V. Lakshmi Award has been established by Prof. Sudhakar Yarlagadda (BT/CHE/1980) in cherished memory of his beloved wife, Smt. Y.V. Lakshmi, whose warmth, encouragement, and unwavering support touched countless lives.

Created to celebrate academic excellence among young women in science, the award will be presented annually to a graduating female student from the Department of Mathematics and Scientific Computing or the Department of Physics with the highest CPI.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the award, Prof. Sudhakar shares:

"This award is established in loving memory of an affectionate and devoted wife, taken away too soon. She would have loved to encourage talented female students."

Through this enduring tribute, her memory will continue to inspire generations of young women to pursue excellence, break barriers, and contribute meaningfully to the world of science.

We are delighted to congratulate Dr. Sanjay Wahal PhD, MBA (BT/CHE/1984) on the publication of his book, A Quantum Walk Through Sustainability : Nonlinear Thinking for a Nonlinear World.

Dr. Wahal is a globally recognized innovation leader, entrepreneur, author, and sustainability strategist. He currently serves as Founder and CEO of Decarbonization, LLC, a strategic advisory and innovation firm that helps organizations translate sustainability ambitions into commercially viable, science-backed outcomes.

In his latest book, Dr. Wahal explores why sustainability challenges behave as complex, nonlinear systems and why solving them requires new ways of thinking that bridge science, technology, systems dynamics, economics, policy, innovation, and human behavior. The book examines how small interventions can create outsized impacts, how interconnected systems generate unexpected outcomes, and why resilience, adaptability, and systems thinking will define the future of sustainable development.

Congratulations to our distinguished alumnus, Mr. Neelkanth Mishra (BT/CSE/1997), on his appointment as Executive Director at the World Bank Headquarters, Washington DC, USA.

Mr. Mishra currently serves as Chief Economist, Axis Bank; Head of Global Research (and Member of the Board), Axis Capital. Widely regarded as one of India's leading economists, he previously spent over two decades at Credit Suisse, where he served as Managing Director, Co-Head of Asia Pacific Strategy, and India Strategist.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Mr. Mishra serves as Part-Time Chairperson of UIDAI (Aadhaar), Part-Time Member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and Member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. He has also advised key national initiatives, including the India Semiconductor Mission and the 15th Finance Commission.

A Gold Medalist and Distinguished Alumnus Awardee (2020) of IIT Kanpur, Mr. Mishra has consistently been recognized among India's top analysts and remains a respected voice on economic and policy matters.

Congratulations to our esteemed alumnus Mr. Kamlesh Kumar Pant (BT/ME/1990) on being appointed as the Chief Secretary to the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

A 1993-batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Mr. Pant will continue to hold key responsibilities as Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue, Forest, Home & Vigilance), Financial Commissioner (Revenue), and Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board.

With more than three decades of distinguished administrative experience, Mr. Pant has held several significant leadership positions, including Chairperson of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), Chief Vigilance Officer at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and Joint Secretary in the Department of Defence Production, Government of India.

Congratulations to our esteemed alumnus, Prof. Prakash Panangaden FRS (M.Sc5/PHY/1975), on being elected a Fellow of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), 2026.

Currently serving as Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh, Prof. Panangaden has been recognized by the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science for his seminal contributions to the semantics and logic of probabilistic computation, leading to extensive applications in systems modelling, verification, and machine learning.

This prestigious honour marks another milestone in Prof. Panangaden’s distinguished academic career, which has been celebrated through several notable accolades, including his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2025, a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2020, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2013.

IIT Kanpur is deeply honoured to share the signing of an MoU with Mr. Anoop Pant and Mrs. Ritu Pant for the establishment of the Ishan Pant Memorial Scholarship for Excellence, in loving memory of their late son, Mr. Ishan Pant (BT/BSBE/2017).

The scholarship will support one undergraduate student every year for four consecutive years, carrying forward Ishan’s legacy through the transformative power of education and opportunity.

The Pant family shared how deeply special IIT Kanpur was to Ishan, and expressed their wish for his memories and spirit to continue living on through this initiative.

Their thoughtful gesture is a moving tribute to a cherished son and a meaningful legacy that will continue to inspire and support future generations of students at IIT Kanpur.
