The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur, is pleased to share that Mr. Kunal Kishore, a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Tanmoy Maiti, has received the AFMD ACS Best Poster Presentation Award at the 2nd International Conference on Advanced Functional Materials and Devices (AFMD-2026), held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, from 19th to 24th March 2026.

At the conference, he presented a poster entitled "Enhanced Waste Recovery in Industrial Systems using Optimized Thermoelectric Generators.”

This recognition highlights the quality of research being carried out in the department and reflects the continued efforts toward advancing functional materials research. The department congratulates Mr. Kunal Kishore on this achievement and wishes him continued success in his research endeavors.

We are delighted to share that Mr. Ankush Kumar, a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Nilesh Badwe, has been honored with the Best Student Presentation Award at the 2025 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit, held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, from November 30 to December 5, 2025. The award was presented under Symposium EL10: Materials in Heterogeneous Integration and Advanced Packaging in recognition of his outstanding oral presentation.

At the conference, he delivered a presentation titled “Low-Temperature Direct Bonding Using Nanocrystalline Cu—Grain Size Engineering Through Electroplating.” His work highlights innovative approaches toward advanced materials integration and packaging technologies, contributing significantly to the field of materials science and engineering.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur, successfully organized the 18th Professor E. C. Subbarao Distinguished Lecture on 14 March 2026. The lecture was delivered by Prof. B. S. Murthy, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, Officiating Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Kurnool, and President of The Indian Institute of Metals.

Prof. Murthy delivered an insightful talk titled “There is Plenty of Exciting World at the Bottom: Probing Materials at the Small Scale,” highlighting advances in understanding materials behavior at small length scales and their technological significance. The lecture witnessed participation from 100+ attendees, including faculty members, research scholars, staff, and students.

The session was opened by Prof. Sarang Ingole, followed by insights into the donor (Mr. Ramamritham Ramkumar) and reflections on the legacy of Prof. E. C. Subbarao, presented by Prof. Kantesh Balani. Prof. Amey Karkare (Dean of Resources and Alumni) also shared his thoughts, recognizing the contributions of the donor and honoring Prof. Subbarao’s enduring academic legacy.

The lecture was followed by an engaging Q&A session, where participants interacted actively with the speaker. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sarang Ingole. As a token of appreciation, Prof. Kantesh Balani presented a memento to Prof. B. S. Murthy.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur, is organizing a two-day workshop on Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) on 4th – 5th February 2026.

This workshop will provide a comprehensive learning experience covering ICP-MS fundamentals, hardware overview, software training, and hands-on sample analysis. The program includes expert technical sessions, industry-led demonstrations, and practical training designed for researchers, students, and professionals working in materials characterization, energy materials, environmental analysis, and recycling technologies.

A key highlight of the workshop includes applications of ICP-MS in metal recovery from spent Li-ion batteries, supporting research in sustainable and advanced materials processing.
