I am Ari Roy, better known as Silk, in trans and hijra community networks in West Bengal. I have been working for the upliftment and wellbeing of my communities for fifteen years. As part of this effort, I mobilized resources for the production of a documentary film about the lives of trans persons and hijras in the district of Nadia and its neighbouring districts in West Bengal in 2024. Nadia is a district that is full of rich and complex histories. Here, many gender minorities from Bangladesh have found shelter or they keep moving across both India and Bangladesh for livelihood purposes. With the help of many well-wishers and allies, I was able to raise some money with which I commissioned independent filmmaker, Sudipto Kundu to make the film. We were able to shoot most of the film with the money that was raised. However, since then due to tragic circumstances, I had to leave my activist network and start a new organization named, Nadia Oikko Trust. It took me a lot of emotional and financial labour to start this new organization and resume my activism from scratch. Moreover, the political scenario has also changed since 2024. We have a new Transgender Protection of Rights Act that has robbed many of our rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The SIR has removed many trans peers from electoral rolls. These twin developments have brought new challenges to trans activism. Therefore, we wish to resume the shoot of the film and add these new developments.
The film will bring national and transnational exposure to the challenges faced by our communities. These challenges are aggravated further by the fact that the earlier cross border sociality that nourished our communities is being torn by new laws and fake propaganda on questions of immigration from Bangladesh. An effective way to reach a larger audience is to be able to showcase one’s work in the audio-visual format. This film will be a call of solidarity and its central message will be trans unity in diversity, a unity that is being dismantled through SIR, the Trans Act and manufactured fear about “illegal migration”.

আমি অরি রায়, পশ্চিমবঙ্গের ট্রান্স ও হিজড়া সম্প্রদায়ের নেটওয়ার্কে সিল্ক নামেই বেশি পরিচিত। আমি পনেরো বছর ধরে আমার সম্প্রদায়ের উন্নতি ও কল্যাণের জন্য কাজ করে আসছি। এই প্রচেষ্টার অংশ হিসেবে, আমি ২০২৪ সালে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের নদিয়া জেলা এবং তার পার্শ্ববর্তী জেলাগুলিতে ট্রান্স ব্যক্তি ও হিজড়াদের জীবন নিয়ে একটি তথ্যচিত্র নির্মাণের জন্য অর্থ সংগ্রহ করেছিলাম। নদিয়া এমন একটি জেলা যার নানান জটিল ইতিহাস রয়েছে। এখানে বাংলাদেশ থেকে আসা অনেক লিঙ্গ সংখ্যালঘু আশ্রয় পেয়েছেন অথবা জীবিকার জন্য ভারত ও বাংলাদেশ উভয় দেশেই যাতায়াত করেন। অনেক শুভাকাঙ্ক্ষী ও সহযোগীদের সাহায্যে আমি কিছু অর্থ সংগ্রহ করতে সক্ষম হয়েছিলাম, যা দিয়ে আমি স্বাধীন চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাতা সুদীপ্ত কুন্ডুকে চলচ্চিত্রটি নির্মাণের দায়িত্ব দিই। সংগৃহীত অর্থ দিয়েই আমরা চলচ্চিত্রটির বেশিরভাগ অংশের শুটিং করতে পেরেছিলাম। কিন্তু তারপর এক অপ্রীতিকর পরিস্থিতির কারণে আমাকে আমার সক্রিয়তার নেটওয়ার্ক ছেড়ে দিতে হয় এবং ‘নদিয়া ঐক্য ট্রাস্ট’ নামে একটি নতুন সংস্থা শুরু করতে হয়। এই নতুন সংস্থাটি শুরু করতে এবং একেবারে শূন্য থেকে আমার সক্রিয়তা পুনরায় শুরু করতে আমাকে প্রচুর মানসিক ও আর্থিক শ্রম দিতে হয়েছে। তাছাড়া, ২০২৪ সাল থেকে রাজনৈতিক প্রেক্ষাপটও বদলে গেছে। আমাদের একটি নতুন ট্রান্সজেন্ডার অধিকার সুরক্ষা আইন (Transgender Protection of Rights Act) রয়েছে, যা সংবিধান দ্বারা নিশ্চিত আমাদের অনেক অধিকার কেড়ে নিয়েছে। এসআইআর (SIR) অনেক ট্রান্স ব্যক্তিকে ভোটার তালিকা থেকে বাদ দিয়েছে। এই দুটি ঘটনা ট্রান্স অ্যাক্টিভিজমের সামনে নতুন প্রতিবন্ধকতা নিয়ে এসেছে। তাই, আমরা চলচ্চিত্রটির শুটিং পুনরায় শুরু করতে এবং এই নতুন ঘটনাগুলোকে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করতে চাই।
চলচ্চিত্রটি আমাদের সম্প্রদায়ের মুখোমুখি হওয়া প্রতিবন্ধকতাগুলোকে জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে তুলে ধরবে। এই প্রতিবন্ধকতাগুলো আরও তীব্র হয়েছে এই কারণে যে, বাংলাদেশ থেকে অভিবাসনের প্রশ্নে নতুন আইন এবং ভুয়ো প্রচারের কারণে আমাদের মধ্যে ধর্মীয় সম্প্রিতি নষ্ট হচ্ছে। বৃহত্তর দর্শকের কাছে পৌঁছানোর একটি কার্যকর উপায় হলো অডিও-ভিজ্যুয়াল মাধ্যমে নিজের কাজ প্রদর্শন করতে পারা। এই চলচ্চিত্রটি হবে সংহতির একটি আহ্বান এবং এর মূল বার্তা হবে বৈচিত্র্যের মধ্যে ট্রান্স ঐক্য—এমন এক ঐক্য যা এসআইআর, ট্রান্স আইন এবং "অবৈধ অভিবাসন" সম্পর্কে তৈরি করা ভয় ভেঙে ফেলতে সাহায্য করবে।
চলচ্চিত্রটির বাজেট খুবই সীমিত এবং আমি বন্ধুদের কাছ থেকে অর্থ সংগ্রহ করলেও, চলচ্চিত্রটি সম্পূর্ণ করার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় অর্থ জোগাড় করতে আমার এখনও আপনাদের সাহায্যের প্রয়োজন। আপনাদের সাহায্য ও সহযোগিতার জন্য ধন্যবাদ।
