((welcome speech))
On this exceptionally auspicious day, the first day of the eighth Tibetan month of the Fire Horse year, Tibetan Royal Year 2153, corresponding to 12 September 2026, we gather to celebrate the Tibetan-calendar birthday of the Most Venerable His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trichen, Ngawang Kunga Thekchen Palbar Trinley Samphel Wanggi Gyalpo.
His Holiness is regarded as the supreme guide who leads all sentient beings, the glorious protector of the teachings and beings throughout the world, the great illuminator of the Sakya school, and the king of all the Vajrayana yogis. In ultimate reality, His Holiness is none other than the great Vajradhara himself, while, according to the perceptions of ordinary beings to be trained, he manifests in human form as an emanation of Manjushri.
On this special and auspicious occasion of His Holiness’s Tibetan birthday, I would first like to offer respectful homage to all the great bodhisattvas, wherever they may abide, with His Holiness foremost among them. As stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra:
“I bow to the body of the one in whom the precious, supreme mind has arisen.
I take refuge in the source of happiness, through whom even those who cause harm are connected with happiness.”
His Holiness was born in the Land of Snow, Tibet, in 1945. Today marks the special occasion of His Holiness having reached 82 years of age according to the Tibetan way of reckoning, with the marks and signs of his enlightened qualities continuing to shine forth.
His Holiness possesses inconceivable qualities, activities, and enlightened deeds. However, as stated in the Secret General Ta**ra:
“Those who are certain to be descendants of the Khön lineage in the future
Are none other than my foremost disciples, the Six Ornaments and the Two Supreme Ones,
And the emanations of the Eighty Mahasiddhas;
Other than these, it would be difficult for anyone else of such fortune to arise.”
Furthermore, since His Holiness’s life story and activities will be explained later in three different languages, I will not elaborate on them here.
With regard to this monastery in particular, under the guidance, advice, and vision of His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin, His Holiness the 42nd Sakya Trizin worked tirelessly, without considering hardship or difficulty, to establish and develop the Tsechen Thinley Dhargye Ling, Sakya monastery in Kalimpong.
The monastery’s foundation was inaugurated on 6 July 2006, on a particularly auspicious occasion when three important celebrations came together: the Western-calendar birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the sacred 10th day of the fifth Tibetan month, commemorating the great Guru Rinpoche, and the birthday of His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin.
Later, on the first day of the eighth Tibetan month of Tibetan Royal Year 2142, corresponding to 2015, the inauguration ceremony marking the opening of the newly constructed monastery was held. We have now reached the 12th anniversary of the completion and inauguration of the monastery.
Furthermore, since 2006, people from the surrounding area—young and old, men and women, and people from all walks of life—have continued to celebrate His Holiness’s birthday with immense and unwavering faith. In previous years, extensive offerings were made through songs, dances, traditional performances, and other forms of celebration.
However, this year, because of natural disasters and the loss of many lives in the Himalayan regions, including Tibet and Nepal, we have decided to temporarily refrain from songs, dances, and other festive performances as a mark of respect and compassion for those who have passed away and for those affected by these tragedies.
Today, on this sacred occasion of His Holiness’s birthday, we have set aside our various important personal activities in order to gather here and celebrate this auspicious occasion together.
First and foremost, I would like to extend a warm and respectful Tashi Delek to our chief guest, the representative of the Tibetan people, the local Representative/Officer of the Tibet Office, who has kindly graced this occasion with his presence.
Likewise, I would like to extend my heartfelt greetings and Tashi Delek to all the distinguished Rinpoches, Lamas, Khenpos, and members of the Sangha, both from within and outside this Monastery, who have gathered here.
I would also like to extend my respectful greetings and Tashi Delek to the representatives of the schools, organizations, and welfare associations who have kindly joined us as special guests, as well as to all our committee members involved in the external administration of this monastery.
Similarly, I extend my heartfelt greetings and Tashi Delek to all the families living in the vicinity of the monastery, the schools, and to all the lay and ordained members of the local community who have continuously supported this monastery—directly and indirectly, in every possible way.
Finally, through the prayers and aspirations of all the disciples gathered here, including myself, may the sacred life of His Holiness remain stable and long for a hundred aeons; may all His enlightened aspirations and wishes be completely fulfilled.
May His Holiness never abandon us, His disciples and those who are to be guided by His teachings, from within the expanse of compassion and primordial wisdom. May His Holiness always continue to look upon us with loving compassion and wisdom.
With these prayers and heartfelt aspirations, I offer my deepest gratitude and appreciation.
Thank you.
