A consultation on sanitation services was organized in Abu Road from 4-6 September 2025 in Abu Road, where representatives from various urban local bodies of Western Rajasthan reviewed the ongoing sanitation initiatives in the city.
In the inauguration session, Shishir from Unnati, welcomed the participants and set the context of the dialogue.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Magan Dan Charan, Chairman of Abu Road Municipality, shared insights about the city’s sanitation system — past and present — and explained how solid waste management has been strengthened with the support of different institutions.
Dr. Gaurav Singh from the Department of Local Self Government, Jaipur, highlighted the status of solid waste management in Rajasthan, emphasizing key points related to Swachh Survekshan and best practices from across the state.
Mr. Sachin Kumar, MIS Engineer, gave a detailed presentation on innovations and practices implemented in Abu Road. He explained how waste collection and disposal have been simplified through new methods. At present, waste from 20 wards is segregated into five categories — wet waste, dry waste, plastic, hazardous waste, and other residuals — for reuse or safe disposal, with active community participation.
Mr. Abhrenil from Urban Management Centre discussed the crucial role of sanitation workers in ensuring effective waste management, the challenges they face, and their current working conditions.
Officials from other municipalities also participated in the program and expressed their commitment to replicate the Abu Road model in their respective towns.
On the second day, participants decided to adopt practices such as source segregation, home and garden composting, waste collection and GIS-based monitoring tools to strengthen sanitation systems in their own municipalities.
