Global Peace Foundation Confers Title of “River Man of Jammu and Kashmir” on Hamza Sheikh
Jammu, June 9: In recognition of his extraordinary courage, selfless humanitarian service, and years of dedication to rescue and recovery operations in some of the most dangerous rivers of Jammu and Kashmir, the Global Peace Foundation has conferred the prestigious title of “River Man of Jammu and Kashmir” upon Hamza Sheikh, a young rescuer from District Doda.
The honour comes as a tribute to Hamza’s remarkable contribution towards saving lives and retrieving the bodies of victims from treacherous rivers and water bodies across the Union Territory. Over the years, Hamza Sheikh has emerged as a symbol of courage and hope for families facing tragedies in rivers known for their powerful currents and hazardous conditions.
Born and raised in District Doda, Hamza Sheikh began participating in rescue and recovery operations at the astonishingly young age of 11 years. What started as a courageous effort to assist local communities gradually evolved into a lifelong mission of humanitarian service. Today, he is widely known across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir for undertaking rescue missions that many trained professionals hesitate to attempt.
Hamza has conducted numerous operations in rivers including the mighty Chenab, Kalnai, Lidder, and several other rivers and streams spread across Jammu and Kashmir. Often risking his own life, he has entered turbulent waters in search of drowning victims, rescued stranded individuals, and helped recover bodies for grieving families, bringing them closure during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
One of his most widely appreciated missions was the search operation for Mohd Ashraf, who drowned in the Lidder River at Pahalgam. Despite the dangerous conditions and the relentless force of the river, Hamza remained engaged in the search operation for six consecutive days. His perseverance, determination, and refusal to give up eventually led to the recovery of the deceased’s body, providing immense relief to the bereaved family.
Recognising this unparalleled commitment to humanity, the Global Peace Foundation described Hamza Sheikh as a true people’s hero whose courage transcends personal safety and serves the larger interests of society. The Foundation noted that his efforts have not only saved lives but have also strengthened the spirit of community service and compassion throughout the region.
The title “River Man of Jammu and Kashmir” reflects Hamza’s unique role as a rescuer who has dedicated much of his life to confronting the dangers posed by raging rivers. The honour places him among a select group of individuals whose humanitarian contributions have left a lasting impact on society.
The recognition follows another significant honour recently bestowed upon Hamza Sheikh by the Himalayan Welfare Organisation, Pahalgam, where renowned environmentalist and social activist Mushtaq Pahalgami felicitated him for his bravery and relentless efforts in river rescue and recovery operations. On that occasion, Hamza was awarded a cash prize of ₹10,000 in appreciation of his humanitarian work.
Mushtaq Pahalgami, widely regarded as one of India’s leading environmentalists and conservationists, praised Hamza’s unwavering commitment to humanity and described him as an inspiration for the younger generation. He also announced that the Himalayan Welfare Organisation would provide Hamza with a modern rescue kit and facilitate professional rescue and disaster-management training to further strengthen his capabilities during emergency operations.
For decades, Mushtaq Pahalgami has been actively involved in environmental conservation, ecological protection, disaster awareness, and community welfare initiatives in the Himalayan region. Through his organisation, he has championed numerous campaigns aimed at protecting natural resources and supporting vulnerable communities, earning admiration from environmentalists and social workers across the country.
Social activists, community leaders, and residents from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir have welcomed the recognition, describing it as a well-deserved tribute to an individual whose bravery has saved lives and brought solace to countless families. Many have urged the administration to formally acknowledge Hamza’s contributions and provide institutional support to strengthen rescue and emergency response mechanisms in the region.
