सुर सधै तो सब सधै, ताल बंधे तो प्राण।
The classroom at Poornima University, Jaipur, recently transformed into a vibrant Chaupal of rhythm. We hosted an immersive, hands-on masterclass on the Khartal—one of Rajasthan’s oldest, most profound traditional percussion instruments—led by the brilliant master musician

Lateeb took the participants on a journey through time. He traced how the instrument evolved from its ancient stone predecessor, the Ghatala, into the beautifully resonant wooden blocks we see today. He highlighted the invisible labor of the master artisans who understand the heartbeat of the wood and shape these instruments entirely by hand.

Beyond the history, it was a session of pure Riyaaz. The students moved from the basics—understanding the delicate finger grip and wrist posture—to flowing effortlessly with intricate desert beats. The highlight of the evening? Watching the students transcend the mechanics and learn how to weave the sharp, clacking rhythm of the Khartal into an actual folk song.

True cultural conservation doesn’t happen just by archiving recordings. It happens when generational knowledge is actively passed down hand-to-hand, skin-to-skin, beat-to-beat.

वे सभा में नहीं गा रही होतीं तो चूल्हे के पास बैठकर गा रही होतीं

उन्हें गाने से मतलब है सुनाने से नहीं
इसलिए वे खलिहान में बैठी-बैठी भी गाती हैं

सुपरिचित कवि प्रभात का यह कवितांश उनकी कविता ‘लोक गायिकाएँ’ से साभार यहाँ चस्पा करते हुए, हम थार की एक विशिष्ट सुर-लहरी मांगीबाई से आपका परिचय करवाना चाहते हैं। उससे पहले हम परंपरा की तरफ़ लौटते हैं। राजस्थान; ख़ासकर इसके पश्चिम इलाक़े में ऐसी बहुत गायिकाएँ हुईं, जिन्हें तुरंत सुर-संसार में ख्याति मिली, उनमें बीकानेर राजघराने की अल्लाह जिल्लाई बाई पहली सफ़ में हैं। अल्लाह जिल्लाई बहुत प्रिविलेज थीं, उनका सीधा राब्ता राज से था। उनके पास बाक़ा’इदा उस्ताद थे, लेकिन ऐसी बहुत सी गायिकाएँ जो सर्वहारा घरों से आयीं और चर्चित नहीं हुईं—मांगीबाई उन्हीं में से एक हैं। लेकिन हमने हमारे प्रयासों से उन्हें आर्काइव किया। जितना संभव हो सके, उतना उनके कंठ को सहेजा।

मांगीबाई मूलत: बीकानेर ज़िले की एक तहसील, श्रीकोलायत की रहवासी हैं। उनका सुर-संसार बहुत वृहद् लेकिन कम चर्चित रहा है। वे ढोली समुदाय से आती हैं, जो लगभग जजमानी पर आधारित एक समुदाय है
(था।) हमारा उनसे लगभग डेढ़ दशक से रागात्मक संबंध रहा है, जो कि अनवरत जारी है। उनके हिंये का संगीत श्रम और लोक की मिठास से निकला संगीत है। माँड को वे जिस ढाल से अपने गले से उतारती हैं, उसे देखना अद्भुत है। वे कहती हैं— “जिस तरह खाने का भी एक स्वाद होता है, वैसे ही गीतों का भी अपना स्वाद होता है। उन्हें पूरे आनंद से महसूस करना चाहिए।”

मलंग फाउंडेशन उनके आकाश का सहभागी रहा है। उनके घर पर हमारी आवाजाही बरसों से है। हम इतना बड़ा कुनबा तो नहीं कि मनुष्यता के सारे संकटों में धैर्य और साथ दे सकें, लेकिन हम सेवा में भरोसा रखते हैं। इसी भरोसे के भरोसे हम ऐसा करते आए हैं। इसी सिलसिले में हमने मांगीबाई के जीर्ण-शीर्ण घर का हमसे हो सका वैसा बीकानेर की तत्कालीन जिला कलेक्टर नम्रता वृष्णि के साथ मिलकर जीर्णोद्धार करवाया है। यह उद्धार जैसा तो कुछ नहीं, बस थार सुर-कोकिला को सप्रेम भेंट भर है।
