Road Safety Training with the Indian Navy

Muskaan Foundation for Road Safety is proud to have had the opportunity to conduct a road safety training program for personnel of the Eastern Naval Command at INS Satavahana, Visakhapatnam.

Over 1,000 naval personnel and family members participated in sessions focused on Defensive Driving, Road Safety Legislation, Traffic Signage and safe road-user behaviour.

Vice Admiral Susheel Menon, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, highlighted concerns around the loss of defence personnel in road crashes, both within and outside campus, reinforcing the importance of responsible road behaviour.

The program also featured an engaging Road Safety Quiz conducted by Lt. Commander B. S. Yadav, making learning interactive and participatory.

The Gurugram hit and run involving a female rider was a barbaric act. We demand strictest action against the perpetrators. The outcome could have been fatal but for the safety gear that the rider wore.

Road Safety Carnival 2026 – Engaging Youth for Safer Roads! 🚦🛣️

Over 3,000 students were reached through the Road Safety Carnival, organised by Muskaan Foundation for Road Safety in association with Vivekananda Global University (VGU), in collaboration with Jaipur Police, and supported by Bosch India Foundation and Bosch India.

The Carnival brought road safety to life through Safe Two-Wheeler Riding Demonstration, Digital Road Safety Quiz, Debate, Poster-Making, Slogan-Writing, Innovative Model Competition, Basic Life Support & First-Aid demonstrations, and other interactive activities.

We were honoured to have Shri Pradeep Mohan Sharma, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Jaipur as the Chief Guest, along with Smt. Sunita Meena, RPS, Additional SP Jaipur South; Shri Son Chand, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Jaipur; and Shri Neeraj Jaiminy, State Lead – CSR, Bosch India Foundation.

🏆 Students showcased their creativity, knowledge and innovative ideas for safer roads, with winners felicitated and awarded cash prizes across the competitions.

🚦 Building Safer Roads Through Education!

Muskaan Foundation successfully conducted a 2-day Training of Trainers (ToT) Program under the BRACE Road Safety School Education Program, bringing together 60+ teachers from 58 Government Schools across Jaipur.

The program was inaugurated by Shri Pradeep Mohan Sharma, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Administration), Jaipur Commissionerate, along with senior officials from the Department of Education, Rajasthan.

During the training, teachers were equipped with essential knowledge and practical skills in:
✅ Road Safety
✅ Defensive Driving
✅ Traffic Signs & Signages
✅ Basic Life Support & Trauma Response
✅ Effective Road Safety Classroom Teaching

Over the next one year, these trained teachers will conduct road safety sessions in their schools, enabling Muskaan Foundation to reach more than 6,000 students and inspire safer road behaviour among young citizens.

Together, we are creating a generation of informed and responsible road users. 🚸💛

What makes a bus stand commuter-friendly?

Our interns visited Ghat Ki Guni Bus Stand Jaipur and spoke to daily passengers about the challenges they face — lack of proper seating, drinking water, cleanliness, waste management, and other basic facilities.

This reel brings forward public voices and requests the concerned authorities to take note of these issues and improve facilities for daily commuters.

"Credibility in road safety is built through consistency, technical competence, transparency, and long-term commitment."

At Beyond Road Safety Awareness: A Symposium on System-Led Road Safety Action, Shri Shantanu Bhasin reflected on the role of institutions and civil society organizations in supporting meaningful road safety action.

He emphasized that organizations must earn trust over time before they can become credible partners for government agencies, communities, and other stakeholders. Sustained engagement, evidence-based work, and transparent processes are essential for building this credibility.

Shri Bhasin also highlighted the urgent need for driver training reform, including certified training institutions, stronger licensing procedures, and structured retraining programmes for repeat offenders.

Another key issue raised by him was the need for dedicated Crash Investigation Units. He noted that road crashes are often attributed only to human error because existing investigation systems may not fully identify deeper causes such as road design, enforcement gaps, vehicle factors, or systemic failures.

In his concluding remarks, Shri Bhasin summarized the major priorities emerging from the symposium: shared responsibility across departments, local solutions for local problems, better use of technology, stronger ambulance and emergency response systems, improved enforcement, and enhanced trauma care.

His reflections reinforced the central message of the day: road safety requires credible institutions, evidence-based action, and coordinated systems working together.

A safe road system requires not only safer roads and vehicles, but also skilled and responsible road users.

At Beyond Road Safety Awareness: A Symposium on System-Led Road Safety Action, Dr. Veerendra Singh Rathore brought an important transport administration perspective to the discussion, focusing on regulation, driver training, licensing systems, and institutional reforms.

He emphasized that traffic must be understood holistically. It includes pedestrians, cyclists, two-wheeler riders, public transport users, commercial vehicles, and private vehicle users. Road safety policies must therefore address the needs of all road users, not only motor vehicle drivers.

Dr. Rathore highlighted the importance of strengthening the three interlinked standards of road safety: vehicle standards, road infrastructure standards, and road user standards. He also drew attention to gaps in driver training, limited accredited training centres, unsafe road works, encroachments, poor maintenance, and infrastructure that is often not assessed from the perspective of actual users.

He recommended stronger formal training for new drivers, refresher training and competency assessment for commercial drivers, and effective use of licence disqualification provisions for repeat offenders, linked with corrective training and community service.

His key message was clear:

“A safe road system requires a skilled and responsible driver.”

Safer cities cannot be built around vehicles alone—they must be designed around people.

At Beyond Road Safety Awareness: A Symposium on System-Led Road Safety Action, Shri N.C. Mathur, Former Director (Engineering-I), Jaipur Development Authority, brought an important urban planning perspective to the discussion.

Drawing from nearly four decades of experience in urban development, he highlighted how Indian cities have increasingly moved towards vehicle-oriented planning, often replicating models from other cities without adapting them to local needs. He emphasized that every city has its own travel patterns, climate, population profile, land use, and mobility challenges, and therefore road safety solutions must be context-specific.

Shri Mathur also underlined the impact of rapid vehicle growth and inadequate public transport, which together have increased congestion, road user conflict, and crash risk. He stressed that sustainable road safety requires stronger investment in public transport and a shift away from car-centric planning.

A key concern raised by him was the neglect of pedestrians and cyclists. He advocated for continuous footpaths, shaded walking spaces, safe crossings, cycling infrastructure, and streets designed for all users—not just motor vehicles.

His message powerfully captured the need for a people-first approach:

“Our mindset has become motorist-centric; it must become people-centric.”
