Found a baby bird on the ground? Don’t panic — and don’t scoop it up just yet. 🐣
Every year during Baby Bird Season, well-meaning people “rescue” birds that were never in danger — and end up separating healthy chicks from parents who were watching from just a few feet away.
So before you act, ask this first: Does it have feathers?
🪶 If it’s feathered and hopping around — it’s a fledgling, not an orphan. This is normal! Parent birds are usually nearby, still feeding it. The best help is no help — keep pets and people away, and let nature do its job.
🐤 If it’s featherless, or has only patchy fuzz — it’s a nestling, and it likely did fall by accident. Gently place it back in its nest if you can find it. No nest in sight? A small basket lined with tissue, hung near where it fell, works as a substitute.
🩹 If it’s injured, cold, or in real danger (near a cat, on a busy road, visibly hurt) — that’s when it’s time to call in trained help. Don’t feed it. Don’t give it water. Don’t keep it overnight “to see how it does.”
📞 Call us. Every hour counts, and we’re trained to know exactly what that bird needs — we’d rather you call and it turns out fine, than not call and it doesn’t.
Save this post. You’ll probably need it this season. 🌿🐦
