Our Story
A group of socially conscious individuals formed the organization Gram Chetna Kendra in 1986 to address the immense needs the rural poor of Rajasthan in terms of development. Under the leadership of Mr. Om Prakash Sharma, these individuals combined their unique talents, knowledge, skills and experiences to address the pressing issues that the communities of Rajasthan were facing. Gram Chetna Kendra, which translates into “Village Awareness Center”, was registered as a voluntary, Non-Governmental organization under the Societies Registration Act. The organization was officially recognized in 1989 and got the FCRA registration in 1992.
Gram Chetna Kendra began its formal operations from the village of Khedi Milak, which is at the heart of the project area. Khedi Milak is located at approximately 55 km from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, in the Sambhar Block of Jaipur District. The association started its activities in two villages from the Sambhar Lake area, to extend and reach 11 districts in Rajasthan. Currently, Gram Chetna Kendra is working specifically in 2 districts (Jaipur and Kota).
Throughout the years, GCK has sustained a range of various activities through funding and support. Initially, the projects were solely focused on improving the welfare of the rural poor through providing them with basic needs, but the organization has since grown and evolved, towards projects based on capacity building and human resource development. We aim to enhance peoples’ abilities to recognize and develop their own potential to address the issues in their own communities and natural environments.
For the past 30+ years, we have been fighting for the rights and entitlements of the most marginalized members of our communities, and especially women, children and differently abled persons.
