Karubai village in Rayagada district, Odisha, is home to many small and marginal farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihood. However, limited landholding, lack of technical knowledge and traditional practices often lead to low productivity and income.

Mrs. Ashi Saraka, a farmer owning just 10 decimals of land, faced similar challenges. She relied on subsistence farming and had never attempted vegetable cultivation during the Rabi season. Due to lack of awareness about scientific methods, proper plantation and organic pest management, her production remained low and income uncertain.

A turning point came when Prayatn Sanstha implemented the ๐—ฆ๐—•๐—œ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜ in collaboration with SBI Foundation in 5 villages with Karubai being one among them. As part of the project, key village-level institutions such as the Gram Seva Committee (GSC), Farmersโ€™ Interest Groups (FIGs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were formed and strengthened. These platforms enabled villagers to collectively identify their needs, plan interventions and improve their livelihoods.

Under the Promotion of Resilient Agriculture intervention, Mrs. Ashi Saraka was identified and supported for vegetable cultivation. She received training on vegetable cultivation and organic farming practices, including land preparation, crop spacing, soil fertility management and eco-friendly pest control methods.

To support her efforts, she was provided with 1,400 brinjal seedlings, organic manure, neem oil and continuous technical guidance from the Prayatn team. Applying the learnings, she adopted organic practices such as preparing Handi Khata to improve soil fertility and using Agniastra for pest control.

With the support of the Custom Hiring Centre established in the villages, she also accessed agricultural equipment, including a battery sprayer and power w**der, which helped in efficient input application, better w**d management, reduced labor effort and improved overall crop management.

The results were encouraging. Between late February and early March 2026, she harvested 170 kg of brinjal and earned โ‚น6,800 from the local market. With further harvests expected, her total income is likely to reach around โ‚น15,000 during the seasons significantly higher than her earlier earnings.

This success has boosted her confidence and interest in vegetable cultivation. She now plans to continue organic farming in the coming seasons and is motivated to share her learning with other farmers in the village.

In the remote tribal village of Badasiguru under Karubai Gram Panchayat in Rayagada district, Odisha, the Government Primary School was once a place of concern for both parents and students. The school building had a damaged roof that leaked during the rainy season and the cracked flooring made it unsafe for children to move around. Basic Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities were not in proper condition. Toilets were non-functional, there was no proper water supply and handwashing facilities were absent. The kitchen used for preparing midday meals was also in poor condition. These challenges created an unhygienic environment and often discouraged regular attendance, affecting both the health and learning experience of students.

Everything changed when Prayatn Sanstha implemented the ๐—ฆ๐—•๐—œ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ Project in collaboration with SBI Foundation. Badasiguru Government Primary School was one of five centres renovated under the intervention. The project focused on improving essential village infrastructure, including educational facilities, to strengthen the overall wellbeing of communities in remote villages through targeted support.

Key village-level institutions like the Gram Seva Committee (GSC), Farmersโ€™ Interest Groups (FIGs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were formed and strengthened to ensure that development work addressed the real needs of the village. These groups created a platform for villagers to collectively identify challenges, prioritize interventions and plan activities. During one of the GSC meetings, members raised concerns about the poor condition of the primary school building and the difficulties children were facing due to unsafe and unhygienic facilities. This discussion guided the focus of the restoration work.

The renovation transformed the school into a safe, clean and welcoming place for children. The roof was repaired and strengthened, damaged flooring was replaced with tiles and toilet facilities were renovated with running water connectivity. Handwashing stations were constructed to promote hygiene and kitchen facilities were repaired to ensure safe preparation of midday meals. The school building was also freshly painted, creating a more pleasant and comfortable learning environment for children.

The transformation has significantly improved the learning environment for students. Structural repairs eliminated safety risks and improved WASH facilities enhanced hygiene and health conditions. Parents now feel more confident sending their children to school and attendance has improved as children return to the classroom with enthusiasm.

The Badasiguru Government Primary School is now more than just a building. It has become a safe and inspiring space where children can learn, play and build a brighter future for themselves and their community.

In the remote tribal village of Uhapaka, Rayagada Odisha, the local Anganwadi Centre was once a place of worry for parents and children alike. The building had a leaking roof, broken windows, toilets and unsafe drinking water. Learning often happened under trees and during the monsoon, the centre became completely unusable. Children missed out on early education and essential nutrition, while parents constantly worried about their safety and wellbeing.

In one of the GSC meetings, members specifically raised concerns about the poor condition of the Anganwadi Centre, highlighting issues like the leaking roof, broken windows and unsafe facilities, which guided the focus of the renovation work.

The renovation transformed the centre into a safe, welcoming and stimulating environment. The roof was repaired, kitchen and toilets upgraded, drinking water made safe and walls decorated with bright BALA (Building as Learning Aid) artwork to make learning interactive and fun. Attendance improved and children returned to the classroom excited to learn. Mothers now gather at the centre to discuss health and nutrition, making it a hub of activity and learning for the community.

Anganwadi worker Ms. Shantimani Kandagari shares: Earlier, children would avoid the centre when it rained. Now, with safe spaces and colorful walls, they come every day excited to learn and play it makes us so happy to see them.

The Uhapaka Anganwadi is now more than a building it is a place where children can dream, play and build a brighter future. It seems that they can change their nursery rhyme โ€“ โ€˜Rain, rain go away, Little J***y wants to playโ€™ to โ€˜Rain, rain, donโ€™t go away, our centre is safe, we can still learn and play.โ€™
