HISTORY
Kherwadi Social Welfare Association (KSWA) was founded in 1928 by Late Shri. He was moved by the plight and miserable living conditions of the 100 odd tanner families who had settled in the marshes of Bandra (E) called Chamdewalla-ki-Wadi. While he was involved in the freedom struggle, leading two ministries in 1937 and 1946, interspersed with prison terms, his friends and associates conti
nued to work in the area, later known as “Kherwadi”. The Trust was registered in 1954 and the Trustees and Executive Council have continued to follow the principles of service and commitment to help the poor and underprivileged and adhere to the high principles of simplicity, integrity and commitment set by the founder. Kherwadi Social Welfare Association started the ‘Yuva Parivartan’ (YP) Movement in 1998 under the leadership of Mr. Kishor Kher and Mrs. Mrinalini Kher to cater to the unmotivated school dropouts and make them economically independent through vocational training. The movement was formally launched in February 2003 by the then President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

OUR WORK
Through years of working on the ground, we have realized that the problem of the school dropouts from underprivileged families is not only economic poverty but social poverty. By social poverty, we mean the absence of social support systems and the socio cultural atmosphere that positively impacts school dropouts to improving themselves. We at Yuva Parivartan have developed a model and identified 4 areas of work, which form the 4 pillars of the Yuva Parivartan model. THE 4 PILLARS OF YUVA PARIVARTAN:
LIVELIHOOD TRAINING
‘Livelihood Training’ is our first pillar which aims at solving the problem of school dropouts without marketable skills. This training enables the students to gain expertise in skills like Electrical Wireman, A/C Refrigeration, Motor Mechanic, Motor Driving, etc. for boys and courses like Tailoring, Cutting, Beautician, Mehendi etc. for girls. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Community engagement aims to develop leadership among underprivileged youth and solve community problems with the help of the youth members of the YP club. KSWA facilitates the formation of the club. Issues like leadership development, community work, problem solving, sports, culture, recreation & life skills are taken up. All members are encouraged to visit the YP centre where they learn to play games and sports. LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT
Over the last 15 years, we have reached out to more than 400,000 youth through our various formats. Of these, approximately 60% are gainfully employed either through a wage or self employment. This is done at each Centre by the centre manager and staff. But the power of influence of each Centre is within a 10 km radius only.To address this issue, YP has a dedicated Placement Cell at the Head Office and has tie ups with many small and large companies -from Retail Outlets of Aditya Birla Group’s More, Big Bazaar, Cafe Coffee Day, Westside, Reliance Retail, Tata Star Bazaar, to Spas and Beauty Parlours, Computer Hardware Companies and, Mobile Phone Galleries, and from Wiremen in large Electrical Companies to Motor Mechanics in Mahindra & Mahindra. INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP
The fourth pillar is Partnership with major stake holders, Industry, Government, NGO’s and communities. This includes tying up with trade agencies and associations for employment opportunities in the unorganized sector as well. At Yuva Parivartan, we arrange industry visits for new students as these industry partners can be potential employers. This helps in motivating students to enrol themselves for related courses. TESTIMONIALS
"The uniqueness of the Yuva Parivartan program..." Mr. R. A. Mashelkar
"The uniqueness of the Yuva Parivartan program is its ability to address the three most important paradoxes confronting the Livelihoods space in the Country today - where 80% of the youth, who do not complete school receive only 20% of the attention; where 90% jobs are in the unorganized sectors, but only 10% of the attention and resources are directed towards unorganized sector; and while 70% of the population lives in the villages, only 30% of the attention goes towards rural India. I am sure Yuva Parivartan will inspire many other NGOs to come into the space of skill development and truly help India leverage its demographic dividend." Mashelkar - President of Global Research Alliance and Former Director General CSIR
WHO WE ARE
Yuva Parivartan is a collective effort of transformers, visionaries, corporates, and the benefactors. An NGO which was cradled in the Kherwadi region of Bandra, is now brimming with endless energy and has spread across the entire nation. In 15 years of its existence, Yuva Parivartan has shown a tremendous growth. The parent centre has now branched out to over 300 centres across 18 states of India, which includes 50 Livelihood Development Centres, more than 200 Partnership Centres, 5 jail Centres and over 2000 mobile rural camp centres. As one of the largest NGOs in the livelihood space in India that works for the “out of school” youth, we strongly believe that the nation’s strength and future lies in the hands of its youth. Unlike the developed countries where 90% youth opt for some or the other sort of vocational training, less than 5% undergo vocational training in our country despite the fact that India is a country with the largest youth population. From 100 students to 4,00,000 students, from 1 centre to more than 300 centres, from the violence affected tribal areas of Maharashtra to the hostile snow-clad terrain of Kashmir, Yuva Parivartan has expanded its horizons to become a national movement. At Yuva Parivartan, we run the only inclusive program in India. The key features of the program are:
Admission to anyone who can read and write with no formal education
Provide vocational training (70% practical & 30% theory)
Soch Ka Parivartan (SKP) - a proprietary program for attitudinal change and life skills such as Decision making, Time Management, Money Management, Values & Perception, health & hygiene, work readiness, etc. Enabling courses in English speaking and basic computer
Community Engagement, Counselling and Mentoring
Job placements and assistance for self-employment. We adopt a holistic approach of enhancing the less fortunate youth with vocational skills, guidance, counselling and financial assistance. Annually, we empower 1,00,000 school dropouts of which over 60% are gainfully employed including those that take a bigger leap of becoming entrepreneur. At Yuva Parivartan, we aim to continue growing and mentoring other local NGOs and government organizations to deliver the YP model of livelihood training to achieve a Pan India presence. VISION
Create opportunities for school dropouts and deprived youth to help them lead productive and socially useful lives. MISSION
To give a second chance to the less educated deprived youth through wage or self-employment based on urban and rural livelihood training provided in partnership with stakeholders. WHY YUVA PARIVARTAN? It is estimated that by 2020 around 500 million people in our country will reach working age, which will be the largest in the world. At the same time, looking at the current scenario where more than 80% of youth in the country have not completed school, it can be inferred that these youth, unless given vocational skills, will neither have enough competency to work as skilled labour to meet the growing needs of various industries, nor will they work for long as casual labour before falling prey to an addiction leading to battered minds & bodies. At Yuva Parivartan, we believe in giving a ‘second chance’ to the out of school deprived youth and help them earn a decent living. By providing vocational training and life skills, we intend to turn the less privileged youth into an asset for the society and the nation. Yuva Parivartan has a flexible and innovative mode that has been appreciated by the Planning Commission and has proved effective in the urban, rural and tribal belts. Our model ensures that the local community needs are met, thus benefiting the youth as well as the entire community or village. Thus, Yuva Parivartan is an inspired movement with a desire to bring about a change for the betterment of the society and the nation. Kherwadi Social Welfare Association’s Credibility:

SCALING UP
Yuva Parivartan addresses the three most important paradoxes confronting the Livelihoods space in India today:
1. 80% of all youth who do not complete school, but, receive only 20% of the attention;
2. 90% jobs are in the unorganized sectors, but, they receive only 10% of the attention and resources;
3. 70% of the population lives in the villages, but, receive only 30% of the attention & resources. The Yuva Parivartan Model attempts to address all 3 in the following manner:
1. It focuses on 80% out of school youth, trying to provide Livelihoods through its own Centres, Partnership Centres and Innovative Formats
2. Creating opportunities in the organised sector by providing placement to those youth through Placement Assistance and setting up a Rural Employment Exchange to aggregate job opportunities in the unorganised sector
3. Providing training for sustainability through farm based occupations through traditional occupations, available resources and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). – We have completed a Pilot in the tribal Taluka of Wada (Thane district) on Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) and will soon extend this initiative to other areas. Realising the quantum of the number of youth to be skilled as well as to ensure that the skilling happens in a time bound manner to leverage the unique 20 to 25 years' window of opportunity called “demographic dividend” available to India, Yuva Parivartan embarked on two “Orbit Changing” initiatives between 2010-15. The first was when Yuva Parivartan scaled up from training 18000 students p.a. to 100,000 students in 2012-13. The second orbit change exercise is currently underway to train 400,000 youth in 2013-14 and scaling up to training 10,00,000 youth in 2014-15. The purpose of these orbit changing exercises is also to provide an example to the Social Development Sector that it is possible for NGOs to scale up efficiently and provide Livelihoods at the lowest cost so as to motivate other NGOs to undertake similar work. OTHER PROJECTS
Yuva Parivartan firmly believes in the concept of providing a second chance. We believe that every individual deserves a second chance to grow. To felicitate another chance to all those seeking to let go their past and strive for a better future, we have several projects catering to a variety of individuals – from rural youth to urban youth, from out-of-school youth to deprived women, and from aspiring entrepreuners to first time offenders. RURAL MOBILE CAMPS
Yuva Parivartan has developed a unique training model to take the vocational skills courses to the rural interiors and tribal belts thereby reaching out to areas which are difficult to access or where setting up a LDC might not be feasible. This is primarily aimed to connect the rural / tribal population in remote areas where there is no reach of government or corporate projects. Our trainer with the help of local districts officers and Panchayat members, organize short duration skill development courses in the strategic location of the villages for rural youth. The courses not only develop their skill and knowledge on their chosen subject but also boost their confidence for entrepreneurial initiative. Yuva Parivartan has conducted hundreds of such camps in the interior Vidarbha,Thane,Raigad & Nashik districts as well as and Marathwada region of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar & J&K and made a difference to the lives of thousands of deprived youth. PRISON PROJECT
Our society does not accept criminals and it has been found very difficult for inmates to integrate into main stream. These youth inmate suffer from negative thinking and are psychologically disturbed. The lure to earn fast and easy money pushes them to crime without imagining its consequences & its impact on their personal and social life. Inmates find it difficult to get jobs/self employment for lack of skill training. Society & family members reject them. The stigma of being an offender renders them helpless to do anything and they again turn to crime to earn money. Yuva Parivartan is committed to help these first time offenders to regain their rightful place in the society and desist from the life of crime. Yuva Parivartan has been successfully running prison project since the last 6 yrs in different prisons of Maharashtra. Presently we have project in Arthur road Prison, Kalyan Prison, Yerwada Central Prison, Vidarbha Zone, Nasik Central Prison & Borstal School, Nasik. In 6 yrs, approximately 2000 inmates have successfully completed their vocational training under this programme. To help bring change in attitudes our Attitude Change Module “Soch Ka Parivartan” is conducted daily along with their course. Sessions on Stress Management, Career choice, Anger management are also conducted. We are in the process of developing our project by offering them a variety of courses and giving them a chance for self employment. We also plan to have a tracking mechanism in place to monitor and help them even after their release from jails. This activity would need resources in terms of money, material and manpower. NTEGRATED RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (IRDP)
A major paradox in the Indian economy is the contribution of agriculture to the GDP is only 15% while contribution to employment is 60%. Further, only 12% of farming is on irrigation, while rest is rain fed, only one crop a year and in fragmented landholdings of marginal farmers. The failure of monsoons leads to famine, debt, starvation and suicides etc. This cycle of misery leads to migration to urban centres. YP IRDP seeks to address the above issues through four main interventions. Improved agricultural practices for higher yields, 2nd crop, cash crop, market linkages, better pricing & kitchen garden. Livestock: Dairying, improved breeds, goat keeping, poultry, fisheries. Water management: Terrace trenching, conservation & Harvesting, Ponds, gabion structure, bunds etc. Women Self Help Groups (SHG’s): Domestic Saving, Livelihood training & Opportunities, market linkages, better agri /livestock practices for self- employment. IRDP conducts training of farmers for improved agricultural practices, women empowerment through SHG formation, water resource management & animal husbandry to improve the livelihood of small & marginal farmers. The first pilot was for 25 villages of Wada taluka in Thane District of Maharashtra about 70 kms from Mumbai which spread to 50 villages in 2012-2013 and further to 75 villages in 2013-2014. This belt is one of the most backward tribal regions of the State. MULTI-DIMENSIONAL TRAINING & EMPLOYMENT (MDTE):
Formerly known as Yuva Parivartan Institute for Skill Development (YPISD), MDTE is the sustainable wing of Yuva Parivartan. It started in 2008 with the fourfold objectives of providing sustainability for Yuva Parivartan under incubation with Government Sponsored, fee based and Corporate Programs under CSR activity & Financial Inclusion, for short-term program based relationship on Livelihood. MDTE has started working with all 4 Verticals. Fourfold Objectives of providing sustainability for Yuva Parivartan –

COUNSELLING SERVICES:
The mission of the Counseling team is to provide help through Psychological interventions and promote change in the lives of every YP student so that they reach optimum potential in work with health and happiness. There are several problems faced by students who have dropped out of school. Some of the key challenges are:
Low self esteem
Lack of motivation
High level of Anxiety
Depression
Confusion on career choice
Lack of support system
Disturbed interpersonal relationships
Unrealistic expectations
Not ready to take up regular jobs. etc
It is observed that most of the dropouts had attitudinal issues leading to dropping out of course or refusing to take up jobs or leaving jobs within a short period of time. To tackle this issue an Attitude change module “Soch Ka Parivartan” has been developed. This covers 12 important attitudes necessary for these youth in getting placed and retaining the job. Training has been provided to all facilitators pan India to use Soch Ka Parivartan. Currently the Counseling team is doing Impact Assessment of Soch Ka Parivartan. Apart from the above the counseling team regularly conducts awareness sessions on various topics like substance abuse, domestic violence, AIDS, mental health, etc. ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Entrepreneurship Development Programs are aimed at Creating Entrepreneurs who will become Job Creators. The EDP Program is aimed to help those who want to start their own enterprise and who want to create jobs not only for themselves but also for others. The program is very interactive, and the participants are taken through topics such as choosing a business, setting it up, running it efficiently, maintaining books of account, marketing their products, understaning the concept of break-even point, importance of quality control, delivering their product or service on time, etc. The program also takes participants through the process and sources of raising finances / loan to start a business. Yuva Parivartan has already conducted a series of the EDP programs across several States in India. It is now in the process of conducting a series of Training of Trainer (TOT) programs across different regions with a view to create a resource pool of Trainers who will then take these EDP programs forward.
