Delhi, Mar 29: The Galo Welfare Society (GWS) and Galo Youth Organisation (GYO), along with prominent leaders and members of the Galo community, met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Member of Parliament Tapir Gao and submitted a memorandum seeking urgent intervention for early sanction and completion of pending works on the AkajanโLikabaliโBame road under SARDP-NE.
The delegation included Dr. Toli Basar, President of Galo Welfare Society (GWS); Shri Sengo Taipodia, President of GWS Lower Siang District; Shri Bomkar Gara, President of Galo Youth Organisation (GYO); Shri Marto Bagra; Shri Tari Mara; Shri Kenbom Riba; and Advocate Dejir Zirdo, APS to the Union Minister.
During the meetings with both the Union Minister and the Member of Parliament, the delegation raised a series of key issues concerning the Galo community, focusing on infrastructure, connectivity, and cultural development.
The memorandum highlighted the urgent need for construction of the balance two-lane stretch from Design Km 33 000 to Km 65 810 (Existing Km 36 000 to Km 71 000), along with restoration and rehabilitation of a critical bridge at Chainage 23 050, including sinking zones.
The delegation pointed out that despite multiple coordination meetings with NHIDCL and district authorities, the proposal is still awaiting approval from the headquarters in New Delhi, delaying vital works.
Describing the AkajanโBame road as a strategic defence corridor, the delegation emphasised its importance in connecting key military locations such as Likabali, Aalo, Basar, and Kaying, and providing access to forward posts along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The road also serves as a lifeline for civilian movement, ensuring supply of essential goods, healthcare access, and facilitating trade and tourism across several districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
In addition, the delegation jointly apprised both leaders of other important demands, including the proposal for construction of a state corridor road from Ruksin to Gumto via Kangku circle, allocation of additional funds for development of a Galo Heritage-cum-Mopin Ground, and the need for proper and adequate establishment of Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) Extension Campus at Kamki under Kamba Circle in West Siang district.
The delegation further reiterated its demand for declaring the AkajanโBame road as a National Highway, citing its strategic, economic, and social significance, and stating that such recognition would ensure better funding, maintenance, and long-term infrastructure development.
Urging timely intervention, the delegation appealed to both the Union Minister and the Member of Parliament to expedite necessary approvals before the onset of the monsoon season. They also assured full cooperation with concerned authorities in facilitating surveys and other required formalities.
