March 22, Itanagar: A suspenseful chase has come to an end when Itanagar Police notorious drug kingpin Rohit Basumatory after a cat and mouse chase resulting in gunfight at Hollongi Road on Friday late evening.
The operation was undertaken by Kengo Dirchi, SDPO Itanagar, which was a part of a major crackdown on drug networks in the nearby area.
By planning ahead using pre-hand intelligence, the police set up a barricade at Hollongi Road to intercept Basumatory’s incoming vehicle.
Upon seeing the police barricade, Basumatory tried to escape the police by ramming his car into an electric pole. After getting off from the vehicle he started to make an escape on foot to run into the darkness trying to evade police capture.
During his desperate attempt to evade arrest, Basumatory fired two bullets, prompting the police to pursue him.
During the chase, he shot another bullet which connected to SI Tamo Bakhang. Fortunately, Bakhang was prepared and was wearing a bulletproof jacket, which saved his life.
Upon being under gunfire the police fired back at Basumatary, hitting him in the leg and finally subduing him.
Being apprehended he was immediately taken into police custody and is admitted to RK Mission Hospital for medical treatment.
SI Tamo Bakhang, escaping death, is currently undergoing medical observation.
SP Rohit Rajbir Singh stated that Basumatory had been under police surveillance for a long time due to his involvement in large-scale drug trafficking in the region.
"The swift action by the team led by SDPO Kengo Dirchi ensured that a major threat to the community was neutralized," he added.
The police have registered a case and further investigations are being carried on.
