SOLUNG: A Celebration of Harvest, Culture & Community

Solung is the main harvest and socio-religious festival of the Adi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. It is celebrated in early September after the sowing season is completed and is an important part of Adi cultural identity.

The festival is linked with agriculture, nature, and traditional beliefs. According to Adi legend, the story of Yidum-Bote and Kine-Nane explains the origin of paddy and the spiritual meaning of the festival. Through this legend, Solung becomes more than just a celebration; it also expresses gratitude to the deities for food, fertility, and prosperity.

During Solung, people perform rituals, offer sacrifices, sing folk songs, and dance in traditional style. One of the popular dances associated with the festival is Ponung. Community feasts are also arranged, and villagers come together to share joy and strengthen social unity.

Solung also reflects the deep bond between the Adi people and their land. It shows how closely their life is connected with farming, cattle, and the natural environment. The festival helps preserve their customs, oral traditions, and religious faith.

In short, Solung is a colorful and meaningful festival that combines harvest celebration, mythology, worship, and community bonding.

The Donyi Polo Cultural & Charitable Trust (DPCCT) held a consultative meeting on 29 August 2026 at Jungle Resort, Sonajuli, Papum Pare, with the participation of the Trustees, representatives of Indigenous Faith Organisations, CBOs and Principals of all six Gurukuls. The meeting focused on the functioning, administration and future development of the Gurukuls.

The participating CBOs were Donyi Polo Yelam Kebang (DPYK), Apatani Danyi Piilo Meder Nello Council (ADPMNC), Galo Indigenous Faith & Cultural Council (GIFCC), Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR), and Tagin Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society (TIF&CS).

A Shraddhanjali programme for Mananeeya A. Balakrishnan Ji was also held, with participants paying their respects and remembering his dedicated service.

The programme concluded with a renewed resolve to work collectively towards the continued development of the six Gurukuls and the preservation and practice of Indigenous traditions for future generations.

A Life of Service, A Bond with Arunachal

Mananeeya A. Balakrishnan Ji, President of Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari, devoted more than five decades of his life to the ideals of Man-Making and Nation-Building. In the 1970s, he walked the difficult trails of Arunachal Pradesh, carrying the vision of Swami Vivekananda and Eknath Ji Ranade to some of the remotest corners of the Northeast. Through his tireless efforts, he played a significant role in laying the foundations of the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya movement in Arunachal Pradesh. Today, as he has left his mortal body and journeyed into the eternal, we remember with deep gratitude a life dedicated to service, education and the awakening of the nation.
For Arunachal Pradesh, his contribution was far more than institutional. His bond with the state was emotional, intimate and deeply rooted in its people, culture and aspirations.
He was happiest on the day he visited Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko, Rang, our first Gurukul. The warmth and affection with which he connected with the children and the institution reflected his enduring love for Arunachal and its people.
Balakrishnan Ji was also full of appreciation for Er. Katung Wahge , Founder Chairman of DPCCT, and his vision of nurturing education while preserving the indigenous identity, culture and traditions of Arunachal Pradesh. He saw in this endeavour a continuation of the ideals that had brought him to Arunachal decades ago.
His journey may have begun in the remote hills of Arunachal in the 1970s, but the seeds he planted have grown into institutions, relationships and generations of young lives inspired by the ideals of service and nation-building.
For countless people of Arunachal, Balakrishnan Ji will remain not just a revered Karyakarta, but a son of Arunachal in spirit.

May his life of dedication, service and sacrifice continue to inspire us in the years to come.

Remembering the unsung heroes of Arunachal Pradesh. 🇮🇳 Their courage gave us freedom; their legacy inspires our children.

1. MATMUR JAMOH
Matmur Jamoh was a native of Yagrung Village, Pasighat Arunachal Pradesh now in East Siang district, who was one of the chieftains of the Adi, to whom the Britishers ill treated. When Mr. Noel Williamson, (the then Asst. Political Officer, Sadiya Assam) led his expedition team at Yagrung. He could not digest the colonial slavery policy and took it a golden opportunity to avenge the oppressor.

The patriotic call of duty that was constantly burning within him sprang up. Therefore, he clandestinely masterminded a plan to wipe out the whole expedition team.

As per plan, on the fateful day of 31st March 1911, Matmur Jamoh and his group killed Mr. Noel Williamson at Komsing and Dr. Gregorson and other 42 sepoys at Pangi Village. The conspiracy was so secretly carried out that even the mighty brain of the colonial ruler could not have a slightest suspicion of the design.

2. BOTE MOYONG
Freedom fighter' Bote Moyong (1924-2005) is remembered as an Adi contributor of India's political struggle for independence. Born in 1924, he was the 13th and youngest son of Lt. Bamut Moyong (HGB of Bogong, presently known as Balek village, Pasighat) and Lt. Metel Dai Moyong (mother).

During 'Quit India Movement' in the year 1942, Bote Moyong participated in the public meeting, initiated by Mahatma Gandhi at Makum in Sadiya. In 1945 be returned to Adi- Pasi village and got married with Bakuk Dai and determined to serve people in need with courage and perseverance. Inspired by Gandhi ji he began to work for the cause of India's freedom from the foreign yoke. Thus he was one of the first Arunachalees to participate in national struggle for independence. As a part of freedom movement he opened a school in the Adi-Pasi village and taught the youths to stand united and fight against the foreign rulers.

3. TAJI MIDEREN
A resident of Elope village in the Ithun Valley of Lohit District, North-East Frontier Agency (Arunachal Pradesh), Taji Mideren was a farmer and trader.

He took part in the activities against British rule and killed three British officers near the Dikran River in 1905. He gathered his Mishmi fellow tribals and got them to come together to resist the expansion of British authority. He established a Mishmi Confederacy under Pangon Dele and other Mishmi Chiefs.

4. MOJE RIBA
Moje Riba (1890-1982), called lovingly as Aboh Nyiji, he was arrested by Britishers in 1947 for campaigning and distribution of Congress pamphlets. He was the first person from Arunachal Pradesh to host the national flag at Dipa Village of Arunachal Pradesh on the 15th August, 1947. He was awarded Tamrapatra in 1972 at Shillong by Government of India In recognition of his sacrifices and contributions towards freedom struggle.

Morning Assembly at Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko, Rang

Every morning begins with discipline, devotion, and unity at Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko, Rang. The assembly includes prayers, traditional chants, news reading, thought presentation, National Pledge, words of wisdom and National Anthem, helping students develop confidence, awareness, and strong moral values while remaining rooted in the Donyi-Polo way of life.

As the ongoing examinations are in progress, today's morning assembly was kept brief to ensure students have sufficient time for revision and their academic preparations.
