For centuries, stories from the African continent have been told by non-African storytellers.
As European filmmakers documenting the work of young changemakers in Southern and Eastern Africa, we wanted to make sure we contribute to breaking that pattern rather than continuing it.
Honestly, this is something where we fell short in the beginning. While we always wanted to include people local to the areas we are filming in the team, we found ourselves "too busy" with other stuff. Deprioritizing that was one of our biggest mistakes.
But since getting in touch with
our crew has been grown to include a Kenyan screenwriter, Zambian co-director, South African colorist, and co-producers from nearly all the countries we are filming in (and counting). This is not us doing anything exceptional, but rather simply us getting closer to doing this right.
Already now, we have gotten to learn from countless incredibly talented filmmakers in the NEWF community, and we are beyond grateful that they are trusting us in capturing these stories. We keep learning, day by day.
