This session will examine the emergence and evolution of early sculptural art in Vidarbha, tracing its artistic development, stylistic features, and cultural context. Through archaeological evidence and visual analysis, the talk will highlight how these early sculptures reflect the region's religious traditions, craftsmanship, and artistic exchanges, offering valuable insights into one of central India's significant yet lesser-explored sculptural traditions.

Every generation believes it inherits history, but what it truly inherits is memory 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱. A monument survives because someone chose not to dismantle it. A forgotten inscription waits because no one paused to read it. A festival continues because a community refused to let it disappear. The past doesn't vanish overnight; it fades each time we stop remembering it.

Perhaps that is why heritage matters. Not because it belongs to museums or textbooks, but because memory needs anchors. Every temple stone, abandoned fort, village tradition, family heirloom and weathered inscription quietly asks the same question: Will you remember me? Carved into a spectacular cliff overlooking the Waghora River in Maharashtra, the 𝗔𝗷𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 stand among the greatest masterpieces of India's cultural and artistic heritage. Recognised as a 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲, these 30 Buddhist rock-cut caves were excavated between the 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗖𝗘 - 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗘. Renowned for their exquisite murals, intricate sculptures, and beautifully carved chaitya halls and viharas, the caves vividly portray the life of Lord Buddha, the Jataka tales and the remarkable artistic achievements of ancient India.

Experience the vibrant 𝗗𝗮𝗵𝗶 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶 celebrations on 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 across Maharashtra. Celebrated during Krishna Janmashtami, this lively folk tradition features teams forming human pyramids to break a suspended earthen pot, accompanied by music, dance and festive community celebrations.

The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Airport (Aurangabad), located about 100 km from the Ajanta Caves. Regular buses, taxis, and private vehicles provide convenient access to the site.

Drawing from extensive field surveys conducted across the rural landscapes of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, we are launching a new series showcasing remarkable heritage sites documented under our flagship initiative, Preserve Heritage for Posterity (PHP).

Through this series, we will bring to light the hidden heritage treasures that are entwined in the rural legacy and have remained outside the main narrative.
