The community we work with live in extreme poverty and are very vulnerable; We are focused on three issues Education, Empowerment and Employment in two slums of Bhaglingampally. Every minute, a girls is sold in s*x trade; and India is one of the largest trafficker of girls. Within India, Andhra Pradesh is one of the biggest sellers of girls. How can we prevent this problem within the vulnerable p

opulation? Unless we develop a relationship with each other and build trust we cannot even begin to talk about these issues. Only if we come together and understand the worlds we live in, can we do something the problems we face. This gave birth to the idea of Aikyah or coming together; it’s a coming together of the two different worlds we live in. Activities of Aikyah:
The community we work with, live in extreme poverty and are very vulnerable; We are focused on three issues Education, Empowerment and Employment in two slums in Bagh Lingampally– Sriram nagar and Lambada bastis. EDUCATION for kids: Through the anganwadis, we are trying to support the education of pre-school kids by supplying them with resources and volunteers. EMPOWERMENT for girls: We started a self-defence program for girls to build their confidence. EMPLOYMENT for women: We are also working on starting a tailoring program for the women in Sriram nagar basti. We hope this will give them a source of income. These kinds of volunteer activities among the vulnerable population will empower them and potentially help in preventing problems like domestic violence and trafficking of women and girls.
