A revolutionary initiative aimed at empowering women by offering them two and three-wheeler training

Every journey begins with confidence. 💜

We’re excited to begin our collaboration with Sparsh Hospice, where the first cohort of women nurses and care staff has started their road safety and Learner’s Licence (LLR) sessions following an orientation session.

For these women, learning to ride is about more than gaining a new skill. It’s about travelling independently, reaching patients with greater ease, and strengthening the care they provide every day.

The journey started with orientation and listening. The response was encouraging—95% of participants wanted to learn, and 90% believed independent mobility would help them provide better home-based care.

Over the coming months, they’ll build confidence, learn to ride, and take one more step towards independent mobility.

Following the launch of Telangana’s first rural Mahila Sanchara Kendram (MSK) in Ghattu, the journey now continues in Hyderabad. 🛵
Every Mahila Sanchara Kendram begins with understanding the women and communities it is designed to serve.

Together with MEPMA, we recently met women from the Slum Level Federation (SLF) network in Lalapet through orientation sessions and community interactions to understand their aspirations, mobility needs, and everyday challenges.

These conversations will shape the Mahila Sanchara Kendram (MSK), Lalapet—an urban model that brings together road safety education, driving skills, shared mobility, and community ownership.

Telangana’s first Rural Mobility Hub is now open.

On 24th June 2026, the Mahila Sanchara Kendram (MSK), Ghattu was inaugurated in Jogulamba Gadwal district by Gadwal MLA Shri Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy, in the presence of District Collector Shri Rizwan Basha Shaik, the President of the Mandal Samakhya, senior officials from SERP and DRDO, and over 100 young women and girlsfrom Ghattu and neighbouring villages.

The Mahila Sanchara Kendram, Ghattu is more than a driving training centre. It brings together road safety education, Learner’s Licence (LLR) support, two-wheeler and three-wheeler driving training, and a shared mobility model, enabling trained women to hire vehicles while supporting the Mandal Samakhya.

Building local leadership is central to this initiative. During our community engagement, 94% of women expressed an interest in becoming trainers themselves. The MSK will build on this aspiration by training local women as driving instructors and creating new livelihood opportunities within the community.

Thank you to SERP for leading this initiative, and to Sarvejana Foundation for supporting the programme with helmets, reinforcing that safe mobility begins with safe riding.

Earleir this month marked the launch of a new mobility initiative at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College, with orientation sessions, registrations, and the commencement of the first training cohort comprising students and female staff.

The cohort has begun with road safety and traffic rules sessions as preparation for the Learner’s Licence (LLR) test—an important first step in every mobility journey.

The initiative combines road safety education with practical driving skills, recognising mobility as an important dimension of women’s empowerment.

We deeply appreciate the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College for creating this opportunity for students and female staff.

We look forward to supporting this cohort as they progress from LLR preparation to practical training and beyond.

Visibility where it matters!

Over the last week, the Women Drivers livelihood pilot in Hyderabad has received encouraging coverage across television, print, and digital media. The best part to this was, seeing our women drivers at the centre of these stories : confidently sharing their experiences, aspirations, and journeys in their own words, in their own language. We are especially glad that these voices were heard.

For many women considering mobility-based livelihoods, seeing another woman driver can shift what feels possible. Every woman featured in these stories will become a role model in her family, neighbourhood, and community. Media plays an important role in making women drivers visible as part of our everyday public spaces.As these trainees move from learning to livelihoods, they are also helping shape new narratives around who belongs on our roads.

We are grateful to media platforms, institutional partners, and social media channels that have amplified these stories and helped normalise women’s presence in mobility.

Last month, MOWO team visited remote village, Gattu in Jogulamba Gadwal district, Telangana, to conduct a field orientation and feasibility assessment around women’s mobility and livelihood opportunities.

With the support of SERP, DRDO field teams, local stakeholders, and SHG networks, we engaged with 80+ women and girls from over 15 surrounding villages through community interactions, surveys, focus group discussions, and site visits.

Some key insights that emerged:
• 89% reported facing barriers in travelling independently
• 85% want to learn scooter riding
• 77% see mobility as a pathway to income generation
• 85% are willing to pay a monthly rental fee for vehicle access once trained
• 94% expressed interest in eventually training other women in their communities

What stood out most was the aspiration, confidence, and readiness among women to access mobility: not just as a skill, but as a pathway to education, livelihoods, and greater independence.

Thank you to all the women, SHG members, and local stakeholders who shared their time, experiences, and insights with us. The learnings from Gattu will help shape an exciting new chapter in rural mobility.

A milestone worth celebrating!
Today, we officially launched the first cohort of women trainees under the TWSW–MOWO Women Driver Livelihood Initiative in Hyderabad.
Launched by the Director General of Police, Telangana, alongside distinguished guests and partners, this moment marks the beginning of new journeys for women who have completed their training and are now ready to enter the mobility workforce.
Over the past few months, these women have built driving skills, road safety awareness, confidence, and professional readiness.

This is a step towards greater economic independence, safer mobility, and increased representation of women in transportation.

From the recent Job Mela cohort in Hyderabad, 70 women who appeared for their LLR tests are now attending structured on-ground 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler driving sessions.

After road safety classes and getting valid Learner’s Licenses, the focus shifts to supervised practical training in controlled environments.

Implementation includes:
• Small-batch sessions for individual attention
• Step-by-step riding progression
• Repetition-based drills for balance, control, braking, and maneuvering
• Strict safety protocols

While some participants began with visible hesitation — particularly first-time riders — consistent practice is leading to steady improvement in vehicle control and road awareness.

All sessions are delivered by women trainers, ensuring a culturally comfortable and safe learning space.

This is a part of the Women Drivers livelihood pilot, implemented in partnership with Telangana Women Safety Wing

We also acknowledge the support of and for vehicle support in this training phase.
