Showing up to a Balika Sangha meeting sounds simple. For most of these girls, it wasn't.

Suspicious mothers monitoring every word. Family members blocking the door. Household chores that left no time. Village elders who drove Tharuni's own coordinators away. And then the girls stepped in to protect them.

This is what participation actually looked like. Not enthusiasm; courage.
Tharuni has been showing up to these villages through every one of these obstacles, rebuilding groups that lost momentum, standing beside girls who had no one else. That kind of persistence needs support to continue.

Behind every staggering statistic is a young girl whose dreams and potential were put on hold. Today, 640 million women and girls live with the reality of having been married before turning 18.

While the global prevalence is slowly declining, it’s not happening fast enough. 12 million girls are still married every single year. If we don't accelerate our efforts, we are looking at a future with 700 million child brides by 2050.

This is a powerful story of resilience and healing. A 16-year-old survivor, facing unimaginable challenges and developmental hurdles, discovered her true potential not through traditional academics, but through the beautiful and intricate art of bangle-making.

By focusing on her strengths and natural eye for design, she transformed her pain into purpose—becoming a skilled artisan, a confident entrepreneur, and a patient teacher to other young girls in her community.

Her journey leaves us with a beautiful reminder: True potential is unlocked when we focus on our strengths, rather than our limitations.

Sometimes abuse doesn’t begin with violence.

Many young girls are manipulated emotionally long before they understand the danger standing in front of them. One wrong person, one vulnerable moment, one decision, can change everything.

At Tharuni, we believe awareness is protection. Conversations like these are uncomfortable, but necessary. Because every girl deserves safety, dignity, and the power to recognise manipulation before it becomes trauma.
