UPI was never free. It just had a price of ₹0 set by the government, not the market.

From 15 October, a small MDR applies to select merchant transactions above ₹2,000. Everyday P2P and small payments stay untouched.

The real question was never 0.4% vs ₹0. It’s who gets to decide the price of a payment, competition or a notification.

At our recent Socratic Samwad “Market Environmentalism: The Best Way to Protect Our Planet” in Pune, participants upended on the traditional climate policy, led by Senior Local Coordinator Rineha Vijay.

On August 27, 2026, Students For Liberty hosted an Online Samvad, a comprehensive digital discussion centered on the current state of free speech and digital liberty in India.

Led by Senior Local Coordinator Chitra Singh, the session critically examined the intersection of platform power, state regulations, and citizens' legal remedies. The discourse provided an academic analysis of recent protests and the broader accountability gap present in modern cyberspace.

Is BitChat now banned in India?

The answer is less simple than it sounds. In July, a takedown order directed at GitHub asked for three code repositories to be disabled, and a similar step had been taken in China earlier in the year. Bitchat is an open-source messaging app that works over Bluetooth, without servers or accounts, and a tool with no central server, built on code that anyone can copy, is difficult to remove by order alone. Attempts to restrict information also tend to draw attention to it, a pattern known as the Streisand effect. Hayek’s observation fits here as well: coordination that has no center is hard for any center to direct. The larger question, for regulators and users alike, is what proportionate oversight of decentralized technology should look like.
