At Indian Grameen Services, we believe environmental restoration is most effective when it is community-led, locally rooted, and sustained through long-term stewardship.

Across diverse landscapes in India, we partner with communities to restore ecosystems, strengthen water security, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainable livelihoods. Through our focused thematic area, Natural Resource-Based Livelihoods, IGS has transformed nature-positive initiatives that integrate ecological restoration with sustainable community development.

Our work spans watershed development, ecological restoration, regenerative farming, sustainable agriculture, afforestation, and community stewardship of natural resources.

Through these efforts, we are:
β€’ Restoring degraded landscapes and ecosystems
β€’ Strengthening water security through watershed and water resource management
β€’ Promoting regenerative and climate-resilient agriculture
β€’ Enhancing biodiversity through native species plantation and ecosystem restoration
β€’ Creating sustainable livelihood opportunities linked to natural resource conservation
β€’ Building local leadership for long-term environmental stewardship

This World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to working with communities to create resilient ecosystems and sustainable futures.

Community-led water conservation starts with collective action and Rajpur, Balrampur is leading by example.

Under the "Mor Gaon More Pani" campaign, Indian Grameen Services (IGS) and the MGNREGA Cell jointly organized a one-day block-level workshop on water conservation at Janpad Panchayat Rajpur as part of the High Impact Mega Watershed Program ( ) 2.0.

The workshop brought together 65 participants, including the Janpad CEO, MGNREGA Programme Officer & Technical Assistants, Panchayat Secretaries, Rozgar Sahayaks, NRLM CRPs and PRPs, Sarpanches, and members of the IGS team, with the objective of strengthening local capacities for effective water resource management.

Participants received detailed technical orientation on key water conservation interventions, including the 5% Model, Aajeevika Dabri, Nava Taria, and drainage line treatment structures such as Boulder Checks, Gully Plugs, and Gabion Structures. Practical sessions focused on site selection, construction of inlets and outlets, silt trap design, and implementation techniques to ensure long-term effectiveness of these structures.

A special focus was placed on the 5% Model, a simple yet impactful water conservation practice that helps retain rainwater within agricultural fields, improve soil moisture, reduce runoff, and enhance groundwater recharge. In a region facing declining groundwater levels, the model offers a sustainable solution for strengthening agricultural productivity and building climate-resilient livelihoods.

During the workshop, Shri Sanjay Kumar Dubey, CEO, Janpad Panchayat Rajpur, emphasized the importance of community participation and encouraged the promotion of the 5% Model across as many farms as possible. Representative from IGS, Mr Radha Raman Pandey also highlighted the model's potential to support long-term water security and sustainable agricultural development.

Targets were set to accelerate implementation through Shramdaan (voluntary community contribution), and participants were encouraged to motivate farmers to adopt these structures on their own fields. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to conserving water resources, improving groundwater recharge, and building resilient rural communities.

🌱 Publication Spotlight | Voices for Sustainable Futures 🌱

We at Indian Grameen Services (IGS) are delighted to share that a small article by Dr. Sanjib Sarangi, Chief Operating Officer, IGS and Lavanya V J have been featured in Paritraan β€” β€œRoots Under Siege: Building Tomorrow Without Losing the Ground Beneath Us” (Vol. 2 Issue 4), the flagship sustainability magazine of the XIM University School of Sustainability. πŸ“–

Their publication, β€œCan Conservation Create Jobs and Growth?”, highlights the urgent need to balance development with ecological sustainability, while emphasizing community resilience and inclusive pathways for the future. 🌱 πŸ“–

🌿 Drawing from grounded field experiences, the article brings in rich insights from the Narmada Riparian Restoration Initiative in Madhya Pradesh, where community-led restoration of riverbanks has not only revived degraded ecosystems but also generated local employment and strengthened rural livelihoods. It illustrates how participatory approaches, native plantation, and convergence with programmes like MGNREGA can transform conservation into a viable development pathway.

πŸ’‘ The article further underscores the importance of integrating local knowledge systems with policy and practice to drive long-term environmental and socio-economic impact.

What happens when a community no longer has to wait for the rains?

In Gram Panchayat Badoli of Rajpur Janpad Panchayat, a check dam constructed under (now VB-G RAM-G) is emerging as an important step toward improved water security, livelihood resilience, and sustainable rural development.

For years, farming in the area depended heavily on seasonal rainfall, with most households relying primarily on a single paddy crop cycle during the monsoon season. Supported by the district administration, community participation, and implementation support from Indian Grameen Services ( ) in partnership with Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation, the initiative aims to strengthen groundwater recharge and improve water availability for agriculture.

The project is expected to create irrigation potential benefiting nearly 50–60 farmers across the Gram Panchayat area and support cultivation of crops such as wheat, maize, mustard, arhar (pigeon pea), watermelon, and seasonal vegetables in the coming seasons.

Beyond water conservation, the initiative is also contributing to local employment generation and strengthening confidence within the community toward more resilient and diversified rural livelihoods.

Badoli’s journey is a reminder that when communities, institutions, and partnerships come together, even a single intervention can create lasting, multi-dimensional change.

At Indian Grameen Services, we remain committed to enabling such locally driven, scalable solutions for sustainable rural development.
