In a country where we have been independent of foreign rule for the past 80 years, are we still completely free to think, act and speak our mind? This Independence Day, choose to speak your truth, however small or insignificant your voice may feel. Happy Independence Day!

On 8th August as the government began razing down plantations at BCT’s research farmlands, over 300 people from nearby villages staged a protest. Farmers from 70 villages showed solidarity & appealed not to harm rural livelihoods & the green cover. The move came after District Collector Smt. Vijay Krishnan issued a notice on Friday, stating that the land was required for industrialization and rehabilitation.
For the past five decades, BCT has been providing services in the fields of education, agriculture, social awareness, sanitation and livestock development. KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) in particular has been impacting 40,000 farmers every year through its various programs since 1995. More than 1000 families directly and indirectly benefit on the farmlands for their livelihoods. BCTs water conservation activities over the past 50 years have recharged water through farm ponds, recharge pits & contour bunds.

The fertile farmland at BCT which serves as a platform for agricultural research is under threat of being felled. Petitioning to save it were 75 conveners and co-conveners who represented 46 Community Action Groups from 6 mandals. A memorandum bearing signatures of 356 persons was submitted to Hon’ble MLA Sri Sundarapu Vijay Kumar on the morning of 29th July.

A request was made to the government that it should not acquire this land keeping in mind BCTs committed services to rural development over the past 50 years through thousands of projects & interventions that have supported farmers, women, youth, and PwDs.

Hon'ble Sri Sundarapu Vijay Kumar, MLA, stated:
“I am well aware of the services being rendered by BCT. Through this institution, significant positive changes have been brought about in the lives of farmers, women, persons with disabilities, and youth. The programmes implemented through BCT-KVK have greatly benefited the surrounding communities and farming families. I assure you that I will make every effort to ensure that the Government does not acquire these lands under any circumstances and that they remain with BCT-KVK.”

Since 1979, BCT set about to work actively and convert the once-deemed wasteland into fertile farmland, using a range of scientific methods.
This steady process recharged aquifers, brought over 100 species of flora & fauna into the region & supported lakhs of farmers.
Since its inception in 1995, BCT KVK has been conducting research here, an activity that supports & benefits over 30,000 farmers every year.
Today, this very land, filled with trees & lush greenery; a testament of tireless efforts of the past 50 years, is at risk of being razed down by the government.
As BCT fights to save it, we ask for your prayers
