Our Forests are Burning, Our Glaciers are Melting" 🌲
During a recent workshop, environmental activist Chandan Singh Nayal delivered a powerful and sobering wake-up call about the ecological crisis gripping our mountains.
His words remind us that we are running out of time, and the peace we seek in nature is under severe threat.
📉 The Harsh Reality:
Forests are ablaze and losing their green cover.
Himalayan glaciers are melting at an alarming rate.
Livestock are starving as natural pastures and fodder disappear.
Broad-leaved oak trees, the vital water-retainers of our ecosystem, are rapidly vanishing.
The Pine Tree Crisis
A major focus of the discussion was the devastating impact of forest fires, heavily fueled by the highly flammable pine needles (pirul) dropped by Pine trees.
"Where will we find peace if our mountains are destroyed? We must come together as a collective force to tackle the crisis of burning pine forests."
— Chandan Singh Nayal
The Way Forward
This isn’t just a local issue; it’s a global climate emergency. To save our hills, we need:
Community action to manage and clear dry pine needles before the fire season.
Afforestation drives focused on planting native, broad-leaved trees (like Oak) that retain moisture and prevent soil erosion.
Collective responsibility from both locals and authorities to protect our fragile ecosystem.
