In Maheshwar, the ongoing gas crisis has made something as basic as cooking a daily struggle. Families are waiting for days to receive LPG cylinders, standing in long queues, and facing uncertainty every single day.

But amidst these challenges, biogas units are quietly bringing relief to rural households.

By converting cow dung into clean cooking fuel, these units as a part of the HRDP initative, provide enough gas to prepare three meals a day for an entire family, reducing dependence on costly LPG cylinders and firewood. The leftover slurry further supports farming by acting as rich organic manure for the fields.

For women like Manorama Di, who has limited mobility in one hand due to polio, this change has been life-changing. Earlier, collecting firewood from the forest was physically exhausting and time-consuming. Today, with a biogas unit installed at home, she no longer has to struggle for fuel and can instead focus her time on agricultural work and daily life with greater ease and dignity.

A simple, sustainable solution creating resilience, savings, and cleaner living for rural communities.

Empowering rural families through sustainable livelihood opportunities

Under the Krishak Kranti by Pernod Ricard Foundation (PRIF), implemented by SUVIDHA, a goat distribution activity was successfully carried out in Derabassi Block, Punjab, covering the villages of Tiwana, Jaula Kalan, and Khijjar Garh.

A total of 10 beneficiaries were supported with 5 months old 50 Beetal mix goats with 5 goats each, comprising 4 female and 1 male goats. The initiative aimed at supporting widows, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and small and marginal households who have the ability to take care of the goats but lack the capital.

Known for their high milk production, adaptability, and fast growth, the Beetal breed is well-suited to the local climate and offers strong potential for income generation.

Goat rearing is emerging as a reliable pathway to stability and self-reliance for rural families. With low investment and simple upkeep, it offers multiple income sources through the sale of milk, kids (young goats), and manure. while gradually building valuable household assets and reducing dependence on daily wage work.

The activity also contributes to nutrition, as goat milk is highly beneficial for children, women, and the elderly. With basic training on feeding, shelter, vaccination, and disease prevention, families are equipped to maintain healthy livestock and enhance productivity.

A sustainability plan is also underway, focusing on breed multiplication, peer-to-peer support, veterinary linkages, and potential market connections for milk and meat, ensuring long-term impact.

This initiative supports self-employment and sustainable livelihood security, contributing to inclusive rural development and an improved quality of life

Strengthening rural agriculture for a greener future.

As a part of the FRDP initiative by HDFC Bank Parivartan and implemented by SUVIDHA, 270 farmers across project villages were supported with battery-operated sprayer pumps, encouraging a shift toward safer, eco-friendly agricultural practices.

By reducing dependency on chemical inputs and lowering operational costs, this intervention is helping farmers adopt more sustainable ways of cultivation.

The change is already visible on the ground. Farmers have reported reduced physical fatigue, improved efficiency, and better crop outcomes through non-chemical practices. With time saved from manual effort, many are now able to focus on additional income-generating activities and better farm management.

More importantly, this initiative is not just about tools, it’s about building confidence and resilience. By equipping farmers with modern, sustainable solutions, it is paving the way for enhanced productivity, economic stability, and long-term livelihood security.
Because when farmers are empowered with the right support, they don’t just grow cropsβ€”they cultivate a more sustainable future for all.

In the remote hill villages of Gairsain, Chamoli, difficult terrain and the absence of proper street lighting often made movement during early mornings and evenings challenging for rural communities.

Poorly lit pathways connecting homes, farms, water sources, and common spaces created safety concerns, especially for women, elderly residents, and farmers returning from agricultural activities after sunset.

To improve safety and accessibility, as a part of the HRDP initiative by HDFC Bank Parivartan and implemented by SUVIDHA, 244 street lights were installed across 20 villages through active community participation and location identification by community members themselves.

The intervention has significantly improved visibility and accessibility across common pathways and village spaces, enabling safer movement during night hours while strengthening connectivity within the communities.

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative has helped create a greater sense of safety, confidence, and well-being among residents, contributing towards more resilient and connected rural communities in the mountain regions of Uttarakhand.

Access to safe drinking water is the foundation of a healthy community.

In Basti, Uttar Pradesh, limited access to clean drinking water had become a major challenge for rural families, while school children also lacked safe and hygienic drinking water facilities

Under the Gram Seva initiative by SBI Foundation, a solar-powered RO water system has been installed to provide safe and purified drinking water to the community. What makes this initiative truly sustainable is that the system is now managed and maintained by community members themselves, encouraging ownership and long-term resilience.

To further strengthen access to safe water, an RO water system with a cooling unit has also been installed in schools, ensuring children have access to clean, safe, and hygienic drinking water throughout the day.

These efforts are creating healthier environments, improving hygiene practices, and moving communities towards a more self-reliant and water-secure future.

Healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable agriculture.

Under Project PRAWAH, supported by HUF, farmers across Ambiapur, Bisauli, Islamnagar, Sahaswan, and Asafpur are gaining access to scientific soil testing through advanced ScanXT devices.

The initiative enables farmers to receive instant soil health reports within minutes, helping them better understand essential soil parameters such as macronutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium), organic carbon, clay content and
cation exchange capacity.

With accurate soil insights, farmers can make informed decisions on fertilizer application, crop planning, and soil management practices.

In the initial phase itself, more than 800+ soil tests were successfully conducted, strengthening awareness around precision farming and sustainable agriculture. This scientific approach to soil testing empowers farmers to make informed decisions for balanced fertilizer application, improved crop planning, enhanced soil fertility, and better agricultural productivity.

By reducing dependency on guesswork and encouraging balanced nutrient management, the initiative is supporting improved productivity, reduced cultivation costs, and long-term soil health.

Project PRAWAH continues to empower farming communities with technology-driven solutions that promote resilient and sustainable agricultural practices for the future.

Changing Farming Through Water-Efficient Irrigation

In groundwater-stressed regions of Dera Bassi, Punjab, where the groundwater levels have fallen to 450-550ft and traditional flood irrigation has long led to excessive water extraction and rising energy use, the Krishak Kranti initiative by Pernod Ricard Foundation (PRIF), implemented by SUVIDHA, is promoting a shift from traditional flood irrigation to smarter, efficient micro irrigation practices.

As part of this initiative, 200 portable sprinkler irrigation systems were distributed to 50 farmers across project villages, comprising of pipes, sprinkler nozzles, risers, connectors, and flow control components, enabling controlled, need-based irrigation, covering approximately one acre of land, collectively improving irrigation practices across nearly 50 acres.

Key Benefits included-
* 30–40% water savings (saving 3–4 lakh litres/acre/season)
* Uniform water distribution for healthier crops
* 25–35% lower electricity consumption( 2-3 hrs shorter pumping cycles)
* 5–10% increase in crop yield
* 10–15% reduction in fertilizer use
Reduced irrigation time is helping farmers manage their efforts more efficiently, while need-based irrigation is lowering dependence on groundwater. In the face of erratic rainfall and rising water stress, this approach is strengthening long-term sustainability.

As farmers adapt to these water efficient irrigation systems, they are also demonstrating the benefits of micro-irrigation, and spreading awareness across villages. This is encouraging more farmers to explore and switch to water resilient irrigation systems, gradually promoting sustainable farming.

Overall, the initiative represents a shift from quantity-driven irrigation to efficiency-driven water management, strengthening livelihoods, conserving critical resources, and paving the way for a more sustainable agricultural future.

Clean surroundings are key to healthier living.

Improper waste disposal and lack of structured systems often led to unhygienic surroundings in the Basti village, affecting both the health of the communities and the environment.

To tackle this and to promote cleanliness in villages, compost units and dustbins have been introduced under the SBI Foundation Gram Seva project and implemented by SUVIDHA, encouraging better waste segregation and management practices.

Today, organic waste is being converted into compost, turning a challenge into an opportunity while promoting cleanliness across the village.

A simple yet powerful shift towards sustainable and responsible living.
