CHAIR MADE WITH PLASTIC

Bharat Ingenuity Foundation in collaboration with Umrongso Municipal Board and Go Green installed a chair made with Eco-bricks at Umrongso Bus Stand.

The concept of Eco-bricks was initiated by Go Green, a collective of youths who come out every Sunday to make these bricks at New Tumbung. BIF is amplifying Go Green’s initiative by creating such infrastructure at Umrongso in collaboration with Umrongso Municipal Board. More such infrastructure is being planned in the upcoming future.

Turning waste into wings of awareness

We’re proud to share our latest initiative at the Golf Course in Umrongso, one of Assam’s most visited tourist destinations. With the aim of promoting awareness on waste management, Bharat Ingenuity Foundation has installed two art installations inspired by a falcon and its wings, crafted entirely using recycled PET bottles.

These structures are a reminder that waste, when managed responsibly, can be transformed into something meaningful and impactful. Through this effort, we hope to encourage both locals and visitors to adopt safer waste disposal practices and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Together, let’s take a step towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Change Begins With Listening

After successfully managing 35,000+ kg of waste at Golf Course Umrongso, our team is now engaging directly with community members across wards under the Umrongso Municipal Board. Through household visits and open conversations, residents are sharing their realities, challenges, and aspirations around waste management.
These dialogues are helping us co-design a model that is rooted in local needs and long-term community ownership. Step by step, we are working towards building a cleaner and more sustainable future together for Umrongso.

Empowering Waste Warriors in Umrongso

Meet Shashikola Rai and Chandra Kumari Rai — two incredible women at the heart of our journey to build a community-based waste management model in Umrongso.

Employed by the Umrongso Tourism Management Committee and trained by the Bharat Ingenuity Foundation (BIF), they have mastered the art of waste segregation and now work with protective gear — ensuring dignity, safety, and pride in their daily efforts.

💪 Together, they have helped us manage over 28,300 kg of waste.
♻️ Nearly 22,000 kg has already been sent as Alternative Fuel & Raw Material (AFR) to a Dalmia Northeast Limited clinkerisation unit.
🔁 The rest is segregated further and sent to recyclers — turning waste into a source of livelihood and circular value.

This is not just about managing waste — it’s about creating community ownership, women-led change, and environmental resilience in one of Northeast India’s most beautiful towns.

Exploring Local Opportunities for Sustainable Livelihoods

Our team, accompanied by an official from J.K. Lakshmi Cements, undertook a field visit to Meghalaya to explore potential livelihood opportunities through locally available resources and entrepreneurship.

The visit focused on two key sectors — Spice Processing and Broom Manufacturing — both of which hold immense potential for community-based economic development.

At the Mynsngat Integrated Village Cooperative Society (West Jaintia Hills), the team gained firsthand insights into spice processing operations, identifying challenges faced by local producers and learning about effective management practices.

We also visited the Basuba Brooms Producer Company Limited (Ri-Bhoi) to observe the functioning of a Farmer Producer Company engaged in broom production and marketing.

These learnings will help us and our partners design informed interventions in Dima Hasao, aiming to strengthen the spice and broom value chains and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
