North East Network, NEN - 1995

North East Network, NEN - 1995 North East Network is a women's rights organisation working in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, India.

North East Network (NEN), is a women’s organisation established in 1995 during the mobilisation process for the Beijing Conference. Ever since its inception the organisation has been raising women’s rights issues, particularly within the developmental and political context of the North East region of India. In its early years the organization focused on empowerment and issues of health and livelih

ood. And from the beginning itself we took serious note on issues of violence that take place in conflict situations, and in the domestic sphere. NEN has been in the forefront of organisations in the region that worked to change developmental discourse from a rights perspective and demanded women’s inclusion in all political and other decision making levels. Over the years, NEN stressed on good governance as a precondition for the enjoyment of human rights and also for addressing gender based discriminations and disparities. NEN responds to specific needs of women in north east India such as gender budgetary allocations, strengthening support services for women affected by violence, and security of women in conflict areas through fact finding processes and advocacy with the government. In addition we organize training's, workshops and publish materials for stakeholders to disseminate information related to conflict, peace and women.

North East Network is deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Achintya Barua, one of the earliest Governing Board members of NEN.

At a time when NEN was sowing its seeds across Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland in 1995 to empower women in the North East region, Achintya Barua stood by the organisation with unwavering support, guidance, and generosity. Through his association with Wild Grass Resorts, Kaziranga, he opened doors for NEN members to gather, reflect, and strengthen collective journeys through retreats and meetings.

He engaged deeply with our team on questions of livelihoods, environment, and rural communities, offering thoughtful insights and invaluable ideas that continue to inspire our work.

We will always remember the warmth, humility, and humanity he carried in every interaction.

May his incredible soul rest in peace and power.

Moon Bora, our Community Mobiliser from Golaghat, Assam, was invited to attend “360° of Case Work: Lessons from the Ground for Future Collective Action”. This conference was organised by Nazariya and it brought together legal practitioners, counsellors, researchers, community organisations, media professionals, and grassroots leaders working towards gender justice.

At NEN, Moon has spent years walking alongside women and girls, holding space, building trust, and quietly reshaping what safety, dignity, and choice can look like within her community.

This conference became a space where lived experiences from the ground met policy, research, and legal discourse.

We are proud to see grassroots leadership from Assam represented in national conversations on gender justice and collective action.
