North East Network, NEN - 1995

North East Network, NEN - 1995 North East Network is a women's rights organisation working in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, India.

North East Network (NEN), is a women’s organisation established in 1995 during the mobilisation process for the Beijing Conference. Ever since its inception the organisation has been raising women’s rights issues, particularly within the developmental and political context of the North East region of India. In its early years the organization focused on empowerment and issues of health and livelih

ood. And from the beginning itself we took serious note on issues of violence that take place in conflict situations, and in the domestic sphere. NEN has been in the forefront of organisations in the region that worked to change developmental discourse from a rights perspective and demanded women’s inclusion in all political and other decision making levels. Over the years, NEN stressed on good governance as a precondition for the enjoyment of human rights and also for addressing gender based discriminations and disparities. NEN responds to specific needs of women in north east India such as gender budgetary allocations, strengthening support services for women affected by violence, and security of women in conflict areas through fact finding processes and advocacy with the government. In addition we organize training's, workshops and publish materials for stakeholders to disseminate information related to conflict, peace and women.

More than 200 participants came together across East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and Eastern West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya — planting trees in Laitkseh, Umsaw, Khartein, and Wahliewlong, and cleaning up Madanrting, with the shared conviction that a healthier environment begins with collective action.

NEN-trained women from Laitkseh also premiered ‘When the Wells Run Dry’ — a film they created themselves on the water crisis shaping their lives. Click the link in our bio to watch the film.

Grateful for the partnership of the Soil & Water Conservation Department, Nongstoin, and the Office of the Range Forest Officer, Mairang — and for every community member who showed up.

The knowledge to protect our environment has always lived within us.

On World Environment Day, communities across six districts of Assam (Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Kamrup (R), Sonitpur, and Udalguri), came together to reflect on and share traditional practices of reducing, reusing, and recycling that have long been part of their everyday lives.

More than 200 community members — support group members, farmers, youth, and peer leaders — gathered under the theme Inspired by Nature for Climate and for Our Future. And they reminded us that nature has always been the greatest teacher.

On World Environment Day, communities across Nagaland came together not just to mark a day, but to reaffirm a shared responsibility.

From tree plantations and cleanliness drives to climate dialogues and waste management sessions, more than 400 women, youth, farmers, students, street vendors, and community leaders joined hands across the state with one common purpose: to care for the land that sustains us.

Grateful for every community, partner, and hand that made it happen — Youth Society, Students' Union, SEWA, Women's Society, Millet Sisters, Pro Rural, and the ADC Office, Chümoukedima.

When action is local and led by the people closest to the land, it goes far beyond awareness.

This World Environment Day, we’re turning intentions into action.

Our team is taking 30-day sustainability pledges - small, conscious changes that can make a meaningful difference. From reducing plastic use and buying less clothing to choosing greener everyday habits, each pledge is a step toward lowering our collective carbon footprint.

Creating a sustainable future isn’t about one big action, it’s about many people making better choices, every day.

What’s your pledge for the planet? 🌱

This , we are observing a series of community-led activities across Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland to promote climate action, biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, and sustainable living.

From tree plantations and cleanliness drives to knowledge-sharing circles, youth-led biodiversity initiatives, and conversations on climate change, we are celebrating and learning from the wisdom and practices that communities have sustained for generations.

Nature holds solutions for our future. It's time to listen, learn, and act together.

To mark Menstrual Hygiene Day, 35 participants, including women and youth from East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and Eastern West Khasi Hills, came together in Meghalaya for an engaging awareness session focused on breaking the stigma around menstruation and promoting informed, sustainable choices.

Facilitated by Iaimanda A. Ryngksai (State Coordinator, NEN Meghalaya), along with Riabakin Khonglah and Badonnam Pyrbot (Associate Project Leads), the session addressed common myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation while introducing eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable washable cloth pads made by one of NEN’s support group member.

By creating a safe space for learning and dialogue, the session equipped participants with accurate information and encouraged conversations that support menstrual health, dignity, and inclusion.
