Across the government schools where 17000ft Foundation's Library Program is implemented in Sikkim, the GROW Chart helps track children's progress as readers.

Using four colour-coded reading levels, Green, Red, Orange and White, children can see their progress as they move through different reading levels. Teachers can also use it to understand where each child is and support their next step.

The GROW system was introduced by Akshara Foundation and is one part of our Library Program, alongside our very own Library App, library spaces, books, teacher support, and reading activities.

17000ft Foundation's Foundational Literacy and Numeracy programme is being implemented across all government schools in Ladakh, with our teams directly managing 65 schools. Children from Grades 1-4 are currently taking part in learning assessments.

Across one of India's largest and most remote regions, our teams are travelling from school to school to conduct these assessments.

They're a way to understand where each child is today and ensure children in these remote communities receive the support they need.

By tracking baseline, midline and endline assessments, teachers and school administration can identify learning gaps early and strengthen literacy and numeracy outcomes.

During a recent assessment exercise in Govt. Middle School Kukstay (Kargil, UT Ladakh), the children were asked to draw anything that they wished to.
A young learner chose to sketch an image of the library shelves in her school! By becoming an integral part of childrens' growing up years and bringing them joy and learning, libraries have made a place in their hearts.
