We got an opportunity to be a small part of the research led by Dr. Jyothi Menon from the Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC). We are providing on-ground support and faciliation for her research that aims to study pollution exposure levels in classrooms.

Let's work together to create a cleaner and healthier environment for our children! It is an extremely enriching experience to have such cross sectoral collaborations.

These insights and inferences drawn in the posts of this series on ‘informal women workers in India’ are primarily based on the capacity building training program conducted by me in collaboration with CURE in 2022, with men and women from slum clusters in Delhi. The sessions aimed at training men and women on worker’s rights, laws and policies for informal workers.

During the training sessions, it was strongly felt that men and women perceive work differently. The barriers and environment for work are drastically different for men and women especially in the informal sector. Governments must prioritise mass level sensitisation campaigns, similar to the Swachh Bharat Mission or Smart Cities Mission to have targeted focus on improving female workforce participation in India, which at present is 135th rank out of 146 countries in the world (WEF, 2022).

A multi pronged approach is required for reducing the gender gap and creating ‘her’(his)story.

Access to safety and security net for informal workers is a grey area. The informal workers sign no formal contract with their employees and thus face many challenges to access social security. They often do not have the same legal protections as formal workers, such as minimum wage laws or protection against workplace discrimination.

Instances of small children loitering around the construction sites, owing to lack of creche facilities provided by contractors is a common sight in cities. Factory workers are compelled to work in inhumane conditions to cut costs.

Various government schemes such as the National Pension Scheme, ESI, e-Shram card, etc. concerning the lives of the workers are available to safeguard their interests. However, in majority of the cases, individuals from low-income settlements who are eligible for these schemes, have not availed for the same owing to lack of access, awareness and resources.

Most of the time, the house acts as a workplace. The majority of the women working out of home-based enterprises do not identify themselves as working women. They constitute the invisible workforce.

They attach their identity more towards raising children and performing household chores. Women are expected to take care of the house as their primary duty and be gainfully employed in addition to fulfilling their household responsibility. Arduous tasks such as fetching water and firewood are attributed to women, affecting their productivity at work.

The constricted spaces, where the home and work co-exist, generally do not offer a comfortable and inspiring work environment, including poor light, ventilation, and appropriate infrastructure for working. This also has a bearing on their health conditions.
