Appropriate Technology India (AT India), being one of the earliest societies founded in the Central Himalayan Region, which had ‘Environment and Livelihoods, of the People of Himalayas’ as its core concern. AT India had since espoused many mountain causes, engaged itself actively in scores of action-research on human and environmental aspects and continues to be so involved to this day. The organi

zation attempt to promote bio-resource based diversification of livelihood options as one of the potential solutions for maintaining ecological integrity and improving life quality of inhabitants in the remote mountains such as bee-keeping, sericulture, off season vegetable cultivation, etc. AT India has experience of working with mountain communities affected by disasters like Kedarnath flood and landslides, and earthquakes.

Carbon Justice Coupon – An Initiative by Appropriate Technology India (AT India)

Appropriate Technology India (AT India)’s Carbon Justice Coupon initiative recognizes and honors individuals who live sustainably and contribute to a low-carbon future through their everyday actions. It promotes climate justice by acknowledging those—often unnoticed—who naturally follow eco-friendly lifestyles and minimize carbon emissions. Through appreciation and small gestures of respect, the initiative aims to inspire a broader movement that values and supports these everyday climate champions.

Continuing this effort, we appreciated Mr. Girish Singh Negi, our guest house caretaker, for his commitment to minimal resource use and environmentally responsible practices. He was awarded a certificate of appreciation along with a small token of respect by our President Prof. S. P. Singh and Board Secretary Dr. Rajesh Naithani.

This initiative highlights a simple belief — true climate action begins by recognizing those who already live in harmony with nature.

“The most powerful climate solutions often come not from grand innovations, but from simple, conscious choices made every day.”

In the quiet hills of Siwai village, Chamoli, a powerful lesson in sustainability and self-reliance is unfolding.

During the swarming season, when a honeybee colony prepares to grow and divide, timing, skill, and care become everything. In this moment, our beekeeping expert demonstrated not just a technique—but a tradition, a livelihood, and a science rooted in harmony with nature.

With calm precision and deep knowledge, he guided the safe capture of a bee swarm using simple yet essential tools—a reminder that empowerment doesn’t always require complexity, but the right knowledge shared at the right time.

This initiative, under the RVN-supported CSR project and implemented by AT Indian, is more than training—it is about building confidence in rural communities, enabling sustainable income, and reconnecting people with nature-based livelihoods.

Every swarm captured is not just a colony relocated—it's an opportunity created.
Every trained hand is a step toward self-reliance.

Let’s continue to support and celebrate the changemakers who are bringing meaningful impact, one village at a time.

In the quiet valleys of Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, a gentle hum is rewriting stories of resilience, dignity, and hope.

“PROSPER is not just a project—it is about creating opportunities, nurturing solutions, and empowering rural lives to grow, enrich, and rise with dignity.”

Under the project Promoting Rural Opportunities & Solutions for Prosperity, Enrichment, and Raise (PROSPER)—supported by Mankind Pharma and implemented by Appropriate Technology India (AT India)—we set out with a simple belief: small interventions can create lasting change.

We began with 50 beneficiaries. This was their first step into beekeeping. Each household received one bee colony, a bee box, and support to construct traditional mud hives—blending modern techniques with indigenous wisdom. Along with this, essential equipment such as swarm-catching nets, gloves, and protective hats ensured both safety and confidence.

But the real transformation happened through knowledge.

From understanding bee behavior to learning how to harvest honey, from crafting mud hives to safely capturing wild swarms during the swarming season—every beneficiary was trained, guided, and supported. What once felt unfamiliar slowly became a source of pride.

And then came the results.

Together, these 50 beneficiaries harvested 142.5 kg of honey. Some of it sweetened their own homes, improving nutrition. The rest found its way into local markets, creating a steady stream of passive income. For families that once depended solely on seasonal agriculture, this became a new pillar of financial stability.

But the impact goes far beyond honey.

This is not just a story about beekeeping.

It is a story about empowerment. About communities rediscovering their connection with nature. About how the smallest creatures can spark the biggest changes.

And in the soft hum of bees across Sirmaur, you can hear the sound of prosperity taking root.

Project Handover Ceremony | Project HRIDAY

At the Birla office of Appropriate Technology India, a significant milestone was marked as we successfully conducted the handover ceremony of Project HRIDAY, supported by LIC Housing Finance Limited and implemented by Appropriate Technology India.

This event brought together the dedicated members of Village Development Committees (VDCs) from Kando and Birla Panchayats in Sirmaur, along with the leadership of the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO). Representatives from ten villages—including Presidents, Secretaries, and Treasurers—stood united, reflecting the true spirit of community-led development.

We were honored by the presence of Chief Guest Mrs. Poonam, Special Guest Mrs. Rita, and from Appropriate Technology India, Executive Director Mr. Sanjay Bisht and Program Manager Mr. Yashwant Singh Rawat.

Over the past three years, Project HRIDAY has touched lives across multiple dimensions:

Individual Level: Rainwater harvesting tanks, LDEP tanks, and sanitation facilities
Community Level: Water infrastructure and solar lighting
Group Level: Sustainable livelihoods including mushroom cultivation, goat rearing, beekeeping, off-season farming, vermicomposting, and spice production
School Level: E-libraries, digital classrooms, and infrastructure improvements
FPO Level: Processing units, storage systems, and digital support

What began as an intervention has now transformed into ownership.

The ceremony was not just about handing over assets—it was about transferring trust, responsibility, and the confidence that communities will continue to grow, sustain, and lead their own development journeys.

As we step back, the communities step forward—with resilience, dignity, and vision.

“True development is not when support arrives, but when communities stand strong even after it leaves. Today, we didn’t end a project—we empowered a future.”

Empowering Women Farmers, Strengthening Futures

Today, at the Birla AT India Office, we witnessed a powerful step toward strengthening grassroots farmer institutions. A one-day Capacity Building Workshop was successfully organized for The Pahadi Krishi Utpadak Cooperative Society under the HRIDAY initiative, supported by LIC Housing Finance Limited and implemented by Appropriate Technology India.

This women-led FPO, with 92 dedicated members, continues to inspire change at the community level. A total of 50 women participants actively engaged in the training, reflecting their commitment to leadership, enterprise, and collective growth.

The workshop was graced by the presence of the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Mrs. Rakhi, and the Block Inspector of Cooperative Societies, Mr. Vivek, who shared valuable insights to strengthen institutional capacity and sustainability.

Key discussions focused on:
• Roles and responsibilities of FPO members
• Rules and regulations of cooperative societies
• Essential documentation for effective functioning
• Access to financial assistance and eligibility criteria
• Critical reasons behind FPO failures and preventive strategies
• Developing a practical and result-oriented FPO Action Plan

The session aimed to equip women farmers with the knowledge, confidence, and institutional clarity needed to transform their collective into a successful and self-reliant enterprise.

The day concluded with an inspection of the FPO unit, reinforcing transparency, accountability, and hands-on learning.

When women farmers are empowered with the right knowledge and institutional support, they do not just build stronger FPOs—they build stronger communities and resilient rural economies.

“Healthcare should travel to the last mile, not the patient’s suffering.”

In the remote village of Lana Baka, accessing quality healthcare often means travelling nearly 50 km. For many families, this distance results in delayed check-ups and untreated early symptoms—turning manageable conditions into long-term health concerns.

On 18th February, Panchayat Bhawan, Lana Baka (Sirmaur), became a center of care and compassion. Under the Holistic Rural Development Program, a Community Health Camp was organized in collaboration with the medical team from Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College & Hospital, bringing specialized healthcare services directly to the community’s doorstep.

By reducing travel barriers and encouraging timely diagnosis, the camp ensured that villagers could seek expert medical advice without leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.

Total Participants: 76

Specialist Services Provided:
• Pediatrics
• Ophthalmology
• Orthopedics
• Gynecology
• General Physician
• ECG Services
• Medical Consultations

This initiative addressed a critical rural healthcare gap—ensuring that distance and time constraints do not prevent early diagnosis and timely intervention.

From Questions of Life to the Realization of Consciousness

Across decades of life’s journey—both in India and abroad—my exploration largely remained within the realms of science and Apara Vidya (worldly knowledge). Yet, in quiet moments of reflection, certain timeless questions repeatedly surfaced within me:

Where does human life truly originate?
Where do we go after death?
Is our life entirely in our own hands, or are we guided by an unseen cosmic order?
Do we create our future, or walk a path already designed?

Our body performs millions of intricate biochemical processes every moment—maintaining balance, enabling growth, evolution, achievement, and fulfillment. From a single cell to tissues, from tissues to organs, from organs to organ systems, and finally to the complete human body—what profound intelligence governs this extraordinary coordination? Our DNA makes each of us unique—yet why does compassion flow naturally in one person, fear arise in another, and equanimity prevail in someone else? Is life merely a chemical combination, or an expression of divine consciousness?

Amidst these reflections, I was blessed with the opportunity to translate and edit the Hindi edition of *Human Physiology: Expression of Veda and the Vedic Literature* by Dr. Tony Nader. The author has built a remarkable bridge between the Vedas and modern physiology—one that is not merely intellectual, but deeply spiritual.

Sharing this profound work with Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister Ajay Tamta, and Hon’ble Minister Ramdas Athawale was not merely a formal milestone—it was an emotional moment. It felt as though India’s ancient consciousness had once again risen before the world, hand in hand with modern science.

The book was graciously presented by Dr. Tony Nader, Founder and Chair of the Board of Advisors and President of Maharishi International University (MIU); and Dr. Raja Jose Luis Alvarez, Director of Maharishi European Research University (MERU), Dr. Rajesh Naithani, Board Secretary of Appropriate Technology India.

Empowering Rural Women Through Mushroom-Based Livelihoods: Impact Stories from Producer Groups Bijnu and Dhaura

Two women-led Producer Groups from Bijnu and Dhaura villages are emerging as powerful examples of how skill-building and continuous handholding can transform rural livelihoods through mushroom cultivation. What began as a small training initiative has now evolved into a sustainable income-generating enterprise managed confidently by rural women within their household spaces.

Key Impact Highlights:
• 14 women mobilized into two Producer Groups, with 7 active cultivators in each village
• 210 mushroom bags installed (Button + Oyster) across both groups
• 1.16 quintals of oyster mushrooms harvested by Bijnu group
• 1.48 quintals of button mushrooms harvested within the first production cycle
• 205 kg total mushroom production achieved by Dhaura group
• Regular market linkage established in Quansi, Sahiya, Chakrata, and Vikasnagar
• Average selling price ranging from ₹100–₹150 per kg
• Approximate income generated: ₹18,000+ from first cycle in Dhaura village alone
• 35–40 kg of mushrooms used for household nutrition, improving family diets
• Women managing production alongside daily household responsibilities

Beyond numbers, the most significant change is the rise in confidence, decision-making ability, and recognition of these women as local entrepreneurs. They are now planning to independently procure mushroom bags and expand production in the next cycle, reflecting long-term sustainability.

Voice of Empowerment: A Heartfelt Reflection from a Woman Producer
“पहले हमें संदेह था कि क्या हम यह काम संभाल पाएँगे। आज हम सिर्फ मशरूम नहीं उगा रहे, बल्कि अपने आत्मविश्वास, सम्मान और बच्चों के उज्ज्वल भविष्य को भी संवार रहे हैं।”

This inspiring journey has been supported by SBI Foundation under the SBIF Sashakti initiative and implemented by Appropriate Technology India (AT India), demonstrating how timely training, inputs, and continuous technical guidance can empower rural women to build resilient and sustainable livelihoods.
